Extensive but unsurprising

You get about what you pay for. Lovely views, well maintained and signposted but little more than that. Best to visit on an event day of which there are many.

We've been meaning to go for ages but as it's on our doorstep hadn't got round to it. Lovely castle in beautiful setting next to the river Wye. The jewel in Chepstows crown.

The grandkids loved this castle, it ticked all the boxes for what they thought a castle should be like! The history is well signposted and the staff are helpful.Entrance fees are a bit steep, but the place was packed.

I thoroughly enjoyed this castle. It's large and in a superb setting high on cliffs above the River Wye. It's now a place of peace quiet and beauty. I don't think it was that for most of its history. It?s now a wonderful ruin to explore, and a superb place from which to observe the local area. Good friendly staff... More

Although some restoration work is currently taking place this didn't impact on viewing this interesting castle much larger than expected possibly could do with more information boards dotted around but otherwise enjoyable, some school trips taking place during our visit but these appeared to be well organised, reasonable admission price, parking on public car park very close by (chargeable)

We turned up on spec and, even though it was a chilly March day, really enjoyed the site. From the pics we had seen, we thought it would be quite a small castle but when we took a walk around the outside we realised how far back it went!! Inside, despite some renovation work being carried out on the Earl's... More

I really wanted to visit this castle because of it's location - it is built right into the edge of a cliff so to speak with the river Wye running right round it. You can get a good view of this and you can also climb quite high for good views (although be careful on the narrow small steps if... More

The castle is very different as it is quite long rather than square. It was very interesting. Some extra signage would have been helpful. At time of visit there was some renovation work ongoing. I would be keen to visit again when this is completed. The high towers had some nice views out over the estuary. Definitely worth a visit.

Great castle to visit for a good few hours of historic and rambling fun and information. Our kids loved exploring all the nooks and crannies and my son thought the historic 'toilets' were brilliant. Stunning views and friendly staff and a good little gift shop too. Easy parking in the car park. Good all round. visit the loos in the... More
