About
A moated fortified manor house, about 2 miles west of Banbury. Built in 1300 and then later added to in 1550, the Castle had strong links with the Parliamentary side in the English Civil War (1642-51). Still a family home, Broughton Castle is lived in by the Fiennes family. Beautiful formal garden and park. Public open days will resume from the beginning of April 2017 (2pm - 5pm Wednesdays and Sundays). We are open for group tours at any time of the year by appointment. We have a recently refurbished tea room offering light lunches and delicious afternoon teas,

Just a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year
Sep 2021
Visited in 2015 and fell in love with the house then. Returned this year to enjoy all its charm and character again. Surrounded by a moat, lots of nooks and crannies, a beautiful rose garden and lots of history. Just a delight. Please visit.

History done well.

Surrounded by a wide moat, Broughton castle is a pleasant visit for a couple of hours. Though the tour or the castle was signed in each room, unobtrusive guides were on hand to answer questions and share the stories of the castle and its occupants. Outside, the formal gardens and surrounding parkland provide great views of the castle from all angles. A small shop and cafe in the grounds provide inexpensive teas, coffee and cake. Covid management was excellent throughout. Wonderful!

Simple stunning

Well-kept grounds.
Large area to go for a walk.
Id rather no dogs were allowed as there are often baby lambs each year - and I have had dogs attack us at picnics

Pleasant visit
Jun 2021
Good start to our short staycation in Oxfordshire area. Castle does not look that impressive from outside and the grounds/gardens were not that big.
Inside there are some nice rooms to see on the one way system and plenty of info available about items on display.
In some areas the furniture was very modern looking and thus out of place.
Booking restrictions and timings when you are travelling for several hours could be difficult to adhere to.

A splendid visit to be had.

Just over two miles south west of Banbury lies this quite stunning attraction. You get four in one. The house sits majestically around the picturesque moat containing many interesting artefacts. The walled garden is a place of much colour and peace. Both are contained in the splendour of the rolling English Countryside. Finally on the way out make a special visit to the Grade 1 Church .
What a splendid visit to be had.

Oxfordshire's Hidden Gem

Never know what is on your doorstep until you explore, so glad I took the time to spend a few hours in the sunshine.
Helpful and friendly staff complement the history and scenery. The gardens and outside area are beautiful especially the scents as you enter the Ladies Garden from the house.
Unfortunately, the views from the roof were not available because of issues with social distancing on the access stairs to the top.
There are toilets in the main car park, a shop, and a tea room.
Would recommend a couple of hours to have a slow walk around the house, gardens, and grounds.

Utterly charming!

Spent a very pleasant, sunny afternoon at Broughton Castle yesterday. Fabulous place, steeped in history. The castle is well maintained and all the staff very friendly and approachable. Even family members mingled with visitors and staff alike, they too were welcoming and friendly and happy to answer questions about the castle and some of it's interesting decorative details.

After visiting the Castle, we enjoyed a walk through the beautiful gardens and strolled by the moat and into the fields beyond. English countryside in all it's glory! We also had tea and cake in a lovely tea room which had ample room for indoor and outdoor seating, all socially distanced of course.

Tickets were on a timed basis to limit numbers but once inside the Castle, you were able to wander around the rooms at your leisure. There was no rushing you through as has been our experience at other places. Photography (no flash) is also permitted. Wonderful way to spend an afternoon and hope to return with family later in the summer.

The most beautiful wisteria clad tea room

Love walking round here, visited inside the moat and saw the house and gardens while we had the chance. Really enjoyed it. The wisteria and café alone are worth it!

Definitely worth a visit
Aug 2020 • Friends
Looking for a day out on a rainy day in lockdown in the area was proving a challenge- so we were lucky to find this gorgeous house near to where we were staying near Banbury. It’s only open on Wednesday and Sunday (and Bank Holidays) and definitely worth a visit. Highlights were the hand painted wallpaper in two of the bedrooms. The family had connections to Oliver Cromwell and Charles I & II so plenty of interesting history. Lovely grounds and cafe too.
