The island fastness of Lochleven is associated with many colourful events...

The island fastness of Lochleven is associated with many colourful events and has been visited by countless distinguished personalities during its history. Some of those taking the boat across Loch Leven came of their own accord, including King Robert Bruce (in 1313 and 1323). Others were held prisoner within the castle's walls - such as Robert, the High Stewart, in 1369, two years before his coronation as Robert II, the first of the royal house of Stewart. But the castle will be forever associated in the memory with another Stewart sovereign, Mary Queen of Scots. She first visited in 1561 as a guest of the owner, Sir William Douglas. But her last stay, in 1567-8, was as his prisoner. It was at Lochleven that she was compelled to abdicate her throne in favour of her infant son, James VI. The castle walls held her for less than a year. In May 1568 she escaped across the loch and before that month was out she was in exile in England. She never saw her native land again. Accessed by small passenger boat. Sailings run on a shuttle basis to and from the island on demand. The trip is about ten minutes each way.

We highly recommend visiting this spot. There is so much to offer for day trippers. The lake surrounding Lochleven offers a very nice trail for walkers, joggers or bike riders. Please take advantage of this you will not regret taking the time. The trip over to the island is great fun, just a short boat ride. The island itself as... More

Myself and my wife were out for a drive in the Kinross area, stopped and had a walk around part of Loch Leven and decided rather impulsively to pay Loch Leven Castle a visit. A short boat ride across the Loch takes you to the Castle. We are not members of Historic Scotland but good news if you are...the trip... More

Our visit started in fog. We arrived early for the first crossing to Loch Leven Castle due to the foggy weather we had a short wait until the mist had cleared enough to sail. Needless to say once we started the short boat trip over it was amazing! There was still a little mist but as it lift on approach... More

Utilised our Historic Scotland membership to visit Lochleven castle today. Got lucky with the October weather and it stayed dry. You take a small boat, 12 passenger max, to access the island where the castle is and they run every 45 mins. The castle is small but atmospheric and definitely worth seeing and it's history is very interesting. The 45... More

Loved this - only two on the island the morning we visited - steeped in history. Be careful of the geese 'poo' early in the morning lol!!

An excellent place to visit with loads of history. I was initially a little disappointed at the suggested time to explore the island, but it turned out to be perfect. Not all the island is open to the public so there is only the castle to explore and there is a surprising amount to see there. The boat ride was... More

Visited Kinross for a weekend break and didn't seem much to do so went here as walking distance and a lovely day. We walked part way around the loch which was lovely. We had a sandwich and coffee in the boathouse with stunning view of the loch. Pricey but very nice. The trip to the castle was £5.50 per adult.... More

Wow.... What fun this was! All of the staff was extremely friendly. Everyone from the sales office staff to the little "goodie" store, to the boatman. It's a neat experience taking a boat out to the castle on the island. The views of the old cemetery on the mainland to the massive "country home" also on the mainland was quite... More
