Peaceful !!!

Some tough spots on this peaceful woodland walk. Based in the Derwent Valley at Rowland's Gill in Gateshead. The monument makes a good target point to head for on your walk.

I last visited this place in 1968...on the same day the Queen Mum made her final visit to what was her family estate. These days it's in the care of the National Trust (with a banqueting house being looked after by the Landmark Trust). The family home, built on a coal fortune, has long been a cavernous ruin. However, the... More

This former home of the Bowes Lyon Family... the Queen Mothers family, is a 15 min drive or 2 min bus ride from Newcastle. it has been turned into a family day out with loads of great things to do and see, from the haunted ruins, to the Orangerey, which you can stay overnight in. there is good food, a... The Autumn colours were stunning and although it was Halloween weekend, and the main entrance and tearoom area was absolutely packed with people, once we walked further afield the paths were deserted. The mine site was interesting and although I've been many times to Gibside, I hadn't actually been to the mine. The place has the ability to absorb a... More

Enjoyed a gorgeous, sunny, autumnal walk in the extensive grounds of Gibside. Who knew you could complete a 5 mile walk and remain within the grounds? We didn't! We followed the green nature trail and thoroughly enjoyed the walk. We also enjoyed a coffee outside at the cafe. However, at a price of £23 ish (with gift aid added) it... More

This was our second visit to Gibside...A great mild morning for walking with beautiful Autumnal colour's and spectacular views. Slightly disappointed this time with the cafe. We stopped for 2 lattes a bacon and a sausage bun. The buns where extremely dry ( no butter) and the one I had was basically a rasher of dry bacon in the middle... More

Visited here for a walk during half term in October and we were hoping to find a fungi trail. Not one person at any reception desk could help us say where any fungi might be. This week is all about Halloween. What a pity that the NT seems to have lost its way with nature and now has focused on... More

The property is noted for its walks rather than its buildings, the main house is a ruin and there are no plans to restore it. There are numerous walks with varying degrees of difficulty and the now obligatory children's play areas. There is a tea shop and other outlets on site.
