Great place for a visit with lots of different rooms to explore, a children's discovery area and a really nice cafe. Its the sort of place you can go to time and time again and see something new, plus they have regular Exhibitions. A good 'Rainy Day' choice if you are in the area

I used to stand infront of the Silver Swan as a child for hours waiting for it to display all of its movement and glory. A most impressive building with lovely views across the beautiful landscape and grounds you can walk round. The exhibits are well displayed with interesting and informative. The range and quality of exhibits is extensive. A much better experience than many museums. In order not to suffer information overload, we alternated looking at a floor of the museum with coffee, a... More

The collection, made by John Bowes and his wife, is stunning. Judging by the quality and variety of items, and the building constructed specifically to show them for the benefit of the public, they must have been very wealthy. The items are well displayed and I would recommend a visit. We also had lunch and an afternoon cuppa (with cake)... More

The Bowes Museum, on the outskirts of Barnard Castle, what a fantastic venue and building to visit, the house reminded me of a French Chateau. The museum contains some fascinating information and exhibits. The grounds surrounding the main building are maintained to a very high standard and a delight to walk around. There is free parking in the grounds. There... More

To be honest, most museums and art galleries leave me cold. Loads of 'stuff' from across the ages, generally displaying far too many items so you can't see the wood for the trees. The Bowes Museum is so different. It concentrates on fine arts and textiles all set out in uncluttered rooms so you can actually see and appreciate the... More
