Reached between the tides via a short causeway, St. Mary's has all the fascination of a miniature, part-time island. The Lighthouse, completed in 1898 on a hazardous coast for shipping, remained operational until 1984 when it was superseded by modern navigational techniques. Since then the Lighthouse and former keepers' cottages have been operated as a visitor centre by North Tyneside Council. The surrounding Nature Reserve contains an area of rockpools, clifftop grassland, a beach and newly created wetland habitats.Wherever possible we are open seven days a week between May and September, and during weekends and school holidays in the winter. However, it is not possible for us to open on some days because of tidal conditions. The stated opening times can also be subject to variations on occasion due to weather affecting the times of the tide.

Out for a bike ride & rode over the causeway & walked up to the lighthouse, it offers incredible views of the coastline & allows for some fantastic images to be caught on camera as the sun is setting, no seals in sight today but lots of families making the most of the glorious weather with children fishing in the... Great views from this island and not far from caravan park we were staying at. You can see right along the beach to the other end of bay to the town.

This lighthouse makes a ideal walk for those who just like a scenic route that isn't too far busy. Although beware that the water levels can change rapidly during the evening.

Climb to the top of the lighthouse for a wonderful view across Whitley Bay. Children as young as 6 and adults as old as 80 made the ascent to experience a wonderful vista of the North Sea coast. Seals were spotted on the rocks below and we went fishing for crabs in the rock pools around the lighthouse. Picnic on... More

Walked across the short causeway at low tide to visit the small shop (+loos) Highlight were the seals. Good spot for birders if you.re interested. Food vans and plenty of seats in nearby car park. Nice spot.

A short walk over the causeway and you are at the lighthouse. Climb the few steps and you can look out over the North Sea. If you're lucky like we were you will see the seals lounging on the rocks. Please remember to be quiet and not approach them though!

Found a leaflet where we are staying for the lighthouse. Well worth the drive here. You should make sure about tide times before you visit as the walkway will get covered at high tide. Carpark is £1.20/ hour. Visitors centre was closed when we came but it didn't matter. Bring fishing nets and buckets for the kids as there are... More

Whitley Bay is a nice, fairly unspoiled coastal attraction on the east coast, near Newcastle city. Very nice on a clear day, unsure how this would be if weather was poor as less t do than other coastal resorts. As a family with 2 teens, we enjoyed the stroll along the beach to get to St Marys Lighthouse and please... More

Lovely walk over to the lighthouse. The highlight for the kids was seeing the seals asking on the rocks.
