About
This 3.2 mile route on the South West Coast Path travels through a long wooded valley to The Torrs, a rugged area also known as 'The Seven Hills' with tremendous views across the Bristol Channel. Any walk around the town features steep gradients, but the magnificent cliff scenery towering above the picturesque harbour makes it worth the effort.

The walk from Ilfracombe to Lee and back (about 6.5 miles) is a great way to spend a few hours as we were rewarded for the efforts with fantastic views out over the Bristol Channel to the Gower and Lundy.
There are a few inclines to negotiate, in particular the walk back out of Lee along the road, so is maybe not suitable for everyone.
Keep a look out for peregrine falcons on their cliff top vantage points, we saw three.
Lee itself is a quiet village and great for kids who will enjoy exploring the low tide rock pools.

Probably even better in the sun. When I ran to Lee, it was misty and drizzly with lots of low cloud. I really liked the climb out of Ilfracombe, and the view from the viewpoint the first time I ran (a shorter run) was lovely

We loved the coastline and walks around Ilfracombe. The harbour is picturesque. The new Lime Kiln cafe opposite the harbour is an absolute gem of a find. We had a great week in and around Ilfracombe.

Park up at Torrs Walk at the highest point in Ilfracombe (Free to NT members) There is a choice of paths up to the first of many vantage points along the main coastal path. Some of the ascents at this end are zig zaggy and rocky. The rest of the route is mostly grass and undulating. As you get nearer to Lee the path becomes a long and wide concrete path which is hard on your feet going down and hard on your thighs on the return journey. 10000 steps either way ticks the box.
Lee itself is tiny but the Grampus Inn provides refreshments, a very cared for public convenience block is something to behold and a small beach has rock pools to explore.

We walked several parts of the south west coastal path during our stay in Ilfracombe. The stretch between Ilfracombe and Lee is very hilly in parts but not a difficult climb if you are fairly fit. The views across the Bristol Channel and out to Lundy are absolutely fabulous but the last mile as you walk into Lee is not as scenic. We also walked in the other direction to Hele Bay (the climb over Hillsborough is very steep in parts) but again worth it for the view back over Ilfracombe.

Me and my son walked from Minehead to Woolacombe in 5 days along the coast of Exmoor. Every day was great with amazing views over the cliffs. The walk was quite strenuous so you need some training first. The walk is not suitable for children.

Enjoyable walk along the coast from Ilfracombe to Lee. It was steep in a few places and I nearly slipped over at one point on the walk back over a section of path that was smooth rock.
The walk out of Lee was really steep and took me quite a while to get to the top but felt really good when I did.
Views are stunning and there are a good few places to sit and take them in. Well worth walking this route but be mindful of the inclines as it won’t be right for everyone.

What a beautiful spot! Fantastic walks along the cliffs, a working harbour with a lovely Sandy beach and shallow water for kids to play when the tide is in, or walk amongst the sailing yachts when it’s out, and there’s a new water sports centre where you can try out kayaking etc. or just enjoy a coffee in the cafe. It’s an up and coming place, well worth a visit, and it has a lifeboat! Loved it. We will be back.

A great walk from Combe Martin to ilfracombe. Many covered wooded paths if steep in places. Mouth watering views in the sunshine. Well worth doing if hard work in the sun. Widmouth definitely worth a visit 😊👀

Walk from Ilfracombe to Lee along coastal walk. Hard word climbing the cliffs and then through fields and down into Lee. Took about one and a half hours. Worth the walk for a pint Ilfracombe cider at the Grumpus Inn.

Hi, where do we start the south West path walk in ilfracombe and are there signs and where does it finish and timings
Thanks,,

Hi Jennifer, hope this helps. The coastal runs north and south from Ilfracombe and is well sign posted, however it does run for hundreds of miles from north Devon through Cornwall and along the south coast. So leaving from ilfracombe you can head north or south both with stunning views and walk as far as your comfortable with remembering it’s the same way back. A suggestion would be to visit Lynton and lynmouth which are joined by the cliff railway and very close to the valley of the rocks which is part of the coastal path stunning views and you can walk the path and return through the valley.

Is this a suitable walk for someone with a breathing condition?
Written 30 July 2019
I would say definitely no for the longer walk - there are some very steep sections and if you get into trouble it could prove awkward to get help. There are however some easier trails Nr Ilfracombe.

Can you walk to the hangman from Ilfracombe
Written 6 July 2019
Honest answer is I don't know, but I would imagine you could, we walked from Ifracombe to Woolacombe but the path does go the other way so ne reason why not
