We have walked the path up to the castle today and as the April 2017 review suggests there is one locked gate however the other is definitely open - and as the reviewer suggests it appears the gate is welded open - so absolutely accessible. Worth the visit the views across the township and further afield are immense.
Beautiful village.

There isn't much to do in Clermont, but there are lots of old ruins and stony things. Among all of those present in town, the Castle (know there as "Le Chateau") is definitely the most interesting of all. It takes just 15/20 minutes walk from the city center to reach the Castle. Before that, you ll have to climb the hill where Clermont was built upon and cross the outer fortifications. These fortifications might be closed at times but it is very easy to pass the barrier.

Once up there you will be rewarded with the best possible view of the town and with the deserted ruins of a medieval Castle. Many parts of the Castle are now in ruins (this dating from the middle age) and you will see big trees growing in the courtyard.

The place is peaceful and is a great start if you want to wander a bit off in the hills (la garrigue) beyond the Castle. There are also very few people visiting the Castle and among them only very few locals.

All in all, visiting the Castle is a mandatory stop in Clermont, just avoid going there in Friday/Saturday nights in the Spring/Summer as the local youth like to go up there to party. Otherwise, it is just fine.

Very upset by lack of goats but ruins as expected. Incredible views of the town. Worth the walk up.

The chateau seems to now be closed to the public owing to safety concerns. We tried to visit but the gate was padlocked shut. The sign there also suggested that the north gate was closed. Disappointing!

Recommend this ruin highly. Amazing views for miles and miles in every direction. If you go follow the signs "feudal castle" in the center of town. You can drive up to the gate which then has a 200 yard path to walk or walk from the center of town about a quarter of a mile. Do not try to accesss the castle from the other side as that entrance is closed. The town entrance near the town old "north gate" appears to always be open as the gate appears to be welded open. If you go on Wed you can hit the excellent Clermont market in the town center and take a picnic up to the castle.

Must be seen - go to the Office de Tourisme for info. Really friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great place to start a walk. Go to the Point du Diable after.
