Home of the Marquess of Anglesey, with spectacular views of Snowdonia.Set on the shores of the Menai Strait amidst breathtakingly beautiful scenery, this elegant house was redesigned by James Wyatt in the 18th century. The 1930s restyled interior is famous for its Rex Whistler association, containing his largest painting and exhibition.A military museum contains relics from the 1st Marquess of Anglesey's tenure, who commanded the cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo. There's a fine spring garden and Australasian arboretum, with an understorey of shrubs and wild flowers, a summer terrace, and massed hydrangeas which give autumn colour.A woodland walk gives access to a marine path beside the Menai Strait.

This house feels so homely when visiting which is unusual for a 'stately home'. Inside there are a treasure trove of paintings and furnishings showing the wealth of the family and their interests. The Whistler mural has to have a mention as it brings a whole room to life and you feel as though you could walk down the passageways... More

Ample parking space and then a 8-10 minute walk from the car, through reception downhill to the Plas. Having just passed through reception, we were delighted to see a red squirrel in one of the trees! The Plas does not in my opinion offer the 'wow' factor of Penrhyn Castle but as a plus, the rooms are not cordoned off... More

We have visited many times before as we live quite locally, Absolutely lovely views over to the Menai Straits, the house was incredibly interesting and we felt as if we were taken back to the olden days which was a lovely feeling. The entry prices are very expensive but luckily we have a National Trust card ( I highly recommend... More

Plas Newydd is just the right size for an afternoon visit. Many rooms are open to the public and the highlights are the Marquis of Anglesey's leg and the Rex Whistler dining room. There are fine views over the Menai Straits.

Unique looking mansion in an enviable position by the Menai straits. However, if you have been to many National Trust properties then you won't find a lot to distinguish it from most of the others. The main exceptions to this are the lovely position and the very impressive Whistler mural. The story of the mural was very well put accross... More

Wonderful setting overlooking the Menai Straits. House very interesting but the best thing to see is the wonderful mural which was painted by Rex Whistler just prior to him enlisting for the second world war in which he was sadly killed. What a talented man. It covers the entire wall of the dining room and show great skill in creating optical... More

We went on the first Saturday of the half term holiday and were surprised just how quiet it was. The weather was cold and sunny with no wind. The late October light was fantastic with the low angle of the sun spotlighting the trees and the remaining flowers and drawing the eye out to views of the mountains and the... More

Great spot for taking in the scenery of the area. Can get some lovely views after you have finished your tour and explore. The grounds and gardens formed the focus of our visit. We enjoyed.

We called in (again) this September. We had a lovely visit and the weather was very kind. We worked the visit "back to front" as most visitors want to see the house first. We did not. After a very welcome "al-fresco" lunch in the kitchen garden we toured the gardens and were very pleased to see a high level of... More
