Unfortunately the teleferico is not working more. The government should keep operating this attraction. The lake view should be awesome.

Visited Amatitlan and to our surprise the teleferico was open. Great views of the lake. You can see the efforts to restore the lake's health. At the top you can find a park with nice trail to walk and chocolate covered strawberries.

Lots of fun, amazing views. This is a nice way to see Guatemala and meet its people as this is an attraction for the locals as well.

We just spent Sunday afternoon in Amatitlan. Unfortunately, the tram wasn't running. From what I gathered, it has been down for some time. Nonetheless, the lake is well worth visiting especially if you'd like a great mojarra (fish) lunch. The atmosphere around the lake is very festive. From candy and balloon sellers to delicious eateries, it's a local Guatemalan tourist destination that sees relatively few gringos. From Antigua, we took a local bus into Guate City where we then grabbed a city bus across town to the central station in the south of the city for one more bus ride down to Amatitlan. Upon arrival, we we just a few minutes walk to the lake. The two hour trip was well worth the effort of getting there. We chose an eatery overlooking the lake. Three large mojarra lunches plus drinks cost about $20. We picked out our own fish and watched it deep fried just a few feet away from us. Unlike mojarra that is sold in mercado comedores, these were hot and fresh having just been cooked for us. Wash it down with your beverage of choice and you're set for rest of the day. Our table provided for a great view of the activity on the beach and of the many small boats out on the lake. My next trip to Antigua will include another visit to Lake Amatitlan for another terrific fish lunch.
