Built in the 17th century this church is one of the most spectacular in Lecce thanks to its characteristic baroque style - barocco leccese as they say in Italy. You will find many richly ornamented altars with extraordinary columns and many statues. The facade is also eye-catching - semicircular at the bottom, more stratight at the top - also nicely... We were ushered in to this church by a big burly man, which we thought was a little odd. Within seconds we observed him demanding money from the people as they were leaving the church. As each person left he was shouting "money on the table, money on the table" and if you didn't put any in said goodness knows... More

Like some other churches in Lecce, the architecture is unmissable, however this is arguably the best.

Puts you off going into the churches in Lecce when people stand around demanding you make a offering. I strongly said no and entered. This church is beautiful. Stand your ground when you go into churches I say. Why should you pay. I wanted to sit and pray.

We took a walking tour of Lecce, and visited what our guide felt were the major churches in Lecce. The Church of San Matteo was not included in the tour, but when I found it open during a bit of a walk-about one evening I went in and found this to be one of the most beautiful churches in the... It is said that the Baroque style in Lecce is characterized mainly because its most original contribution is applied, rather than to architecture, to decoration of buildings. From this point of view, perhaps the most famous monument in Lecce, the Santa Croce's Basilica, is revealing: the incredible, exuberant decoration of the facade fits into a pattern that is after all... Look caredully at the statues as they are made of papier mache and not marble or stone.Quite amazing the artistry.

There are so many churches in Lecce - it seems like one on every corner - but the baroque elegance of this one makes it worth a visit. Superb outside but even more impressive decor inside.

Lecce is one of the most beautifull cities in Italy, noble and nice for visit in any period of year. Even in January it was sunny and pleasant. Beautifully buildings and churches, nice pedestrian quart.
