If your main interest is Renaissance art, this chapel in the main reason to come to Orvieto. The medieval history is important, a major strategic holding of the popes; but Signorelli’s art ( a little of Beato Angelico and of Gozzoli too) was a major influence on Michelangelo.

The paintings on the inside are mind blowing. This is a must see in my mind, it's worth going out of the way to see.

Hard to believe we were gazing at the same frescos that inspired Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel. Amazing!

You may keep the Sistine. Give me Signorelli (and fra Angelico). The high renaissance at its very highest. Extraordinary.

Phenomenally beautiful chapel inside the Duomo of Orvieto. Get a small guide (free at the entrance) to explain some of the art. Look for the artist in the paintings!

Even with a guide showing all the multitude of figures in the frescoes, too much to wrap your mind around. Stunning.

My wife and me believe the Duomo of Orvieto is the most spetacular church we have visited in Europe (we have seen many...) The affreschi from Luca Signorelli in the Cappella di San Brizio makes you gasp for air... Truly magnificent!

This chapel, in the right front corner of the church, is the most significant part of an otherwise relatively simply decorated Duomo. The frescos are some of the most beautiful we have ever seen.

We visited late in the afternoon, when most of the tour buses had left, so we had no crowd.
