We live near Nice/Nizza in the summer, winters in Miami area.
San Remo is our favorite spot to go to especially on Saturdays, as they have a wonderful market. Many good restaurants at very attractive prices, wonderful beaches and corso impératrice to take a casual walk at the Mediterranean. And there is a wonderful bicycle trail along the Mediterranean

San Remo is a great place to visit and to fall in love with ! What we like the most is to visit the market on Saturday and Tuesday, enjoy first a great Italian coffee, have lunch at the many nice Italian restaurants ( we prefer La Vita e bella or Mare Blu ), go for a bicycle ride along the Mediterranean, and end the day with an Aperol Spritz and complimentary appetizers.
The beach is best at Oasis, they serve good food & drinks as well and the chaise lounges & umbrellas are reasonably priced.
Go there ! Don’t forget to visit the Casino and Via Matteotti, the pedestrian shopping street !

One of the most pleasant activities is to go for a stroll on the about 1km long 'Corso dell'Imperatrice' in the western part of the town, with great views over the Tyrrhenian Sea. The pedestrian only walkway had been created in the 19th century. Its floor consists of a regular pattern of red, black and white flagstones, while on the side are two kind of palmtrees: 'Canary Palms', from its branches recognizable as members of the family of the date palms. The other, usually higher palm, but with a smaller crown is a 'Mexican Fan Palm' (Washingtonia robusta).
The money to buy the palms was offered by the Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna (born Marie of Hesse), who stayed in Sanremo for about 3 months in the winter 1874/75 and apparently enjoyed her time here. The Corso was then named in her honour.
The Empress, suffering from tuberculosis, had come from Nice, to where she often went for health reasons, escaping the harsh Russian winters. Her husband, Tsar Alexander II, called 'The Liberator', stayed back in St.Petersburg, having several affairs and more children besides the eight by his wife, the Tsarina.
At the beginning of the Corso, coming from the town, is a symbol of Sanremo, the white marble statue of 'Primavera' (spring) by sculptor Vincenzo Pasquali.

It is a lot of fun to walk along the Corso dell'Imperatrice. Take your time to look at the ships and have a perfect Italian coffee.

This is a safe and easy walk along the promenade ; you can enjoy views over the sea and pass by grand houses and hotels ; This is also easy access to a family cycling and walking track and also alongside some small sandy or rocky beaches with plenty of facilities to suit young families ; Even on a winters day walkers and joggers will enjoy this area;

Quite beautiful and historic promenade, where many famous people used to stroll around. It looks a bit past its golden age, like the city of Sanremo itself.

Corso dell’Imperatrice, SANREMO, Liguria, Italy
SANREMO’s RODEO DRIVE
It is a 1km (0,8 miles) seafront street, slightly uphill with palms of different heights and a cosy pedestrian area having a white and reddish checkerboard floor. Palms are so vigorous. So green. So graceful. Taking advantage of the mild climate of Sanremo, they are simply blossoming. An eye specialist may detect two varieties: Washingtonia robusta and Phoenix canariensis. Around 1874, the Russian princess Maria Alexandrovna, daughter of Emperor Alexander II of Russia, after a pleasant voyage in Sanremo, made a grant to the City Council in order to embellish the side of town called “Ponente” which is the area where Corso dell’Imperatrice is situated. The Sanremo Rodeo Drive was born even before the Californian one which was established 40 years later.
While the Tirrenian Sea is on your left and you walk toward the newly restored Miramare The Palace Hotel, you meet a white marble statue called “Venere dei Fiori” or “Primavera”. It is a flash of light in the small garden of palms. What a gracefulness. What a splendeour. The young lady is barefoot with raising arms full of flowers. What a joie de vivre in her visage. It is the work of the sculptor Vincenzo Pasquali (1879-1940) who sculpted it in his house located in the nearby Corso degli Inglesi, a two floor ’20 villa which presently belongs to the Novelli family.

A nice place to take a walk. With the beautiful palm trees which are gifted by Russian imperatrice Maria Alexandranova in 1984.

The first Grand Hotels in Sanremo were built over 150 years ago to accomodate foreign high society on their journeys to the Mediterranean. These majestic buildings still line the waterfront in various stages of reconstruction. Those with a total makeover cost most but you can also enjoy total comfort in a bit faded glory for example in Grand Hotel Londra where I stayed a week. The crowded beaches below, where everything costs and rules are strict are not my idea of an Italian holiday. There are man made stone piers sheltering from high waves, but the shallow water looks and feels muddy. Luckily I found an excellent spot of open and clear water some kilometres away after the large port at Punto
San Martino.
San Martino.

The promenade in Sanremo is really beautiful with it's huge palmtrees and park along. The padastrian area with it's shops is also attractive just like the Casino. Warning: Do not go down along the see around at the parking area, as there is a huge mass and litter everywhere.
