we guessed what the statue represented before we read the plaque, very poignent and makes you realise the dangers of the sea.

Last year while visiting the Villa Argentina, we were given a tour of its then-current art exhibition (works by Sig. Biancalana, and also L'attesa's sculptor) by his son. Fascinating, to say the least. Having walked by this emotional piece of statuary so many times on our early morning walks, it was fascinating to spend the time at the Villa with the sculptor's son. The English translation of the plaque on the statue, though, will raise a smile. The walk alone along the Molo in the early morning is super, too.

L'attesa, Gionata Francesconi's bronze reconstruction of the wooden statue by Inaco, is not so much a destination in itself as it is part of the experience of walking on the molo (pier.) The sculpture depicts a family anxiously awaiting the return of a ship and because it faces the sea, rather than the pier, most of the family is not visible. However, the sculpture is supposed to embody hope and it does that amply from it's rocky perch next to the pier.
