Just out of town past the harbour a good reminder of the history of Viareggio but only if you are in the area.

It's the most antique site of town from the Roman and Medieval ages and was built on the site of old castrum, from the Emperor Frederico Barbarossa; this castle , the Pisians and Luccans fought over for some time and the torre Mathilde (Mathilda tower) was build in this place.

I went here but the whole thing is closed for some reason. It's located by Viareggios most hectic round about I would guess.

Come on Italy! Get your act together. This is probably one of the most important historical sites in Viareggio, and it's closed to the public! The concierge at the hotel tried to phone the council to find out how to access it, and failed. If you are going to Viareggio and you find someone to do with the tourist board, give them an earful from me!…

This is more about an encouragment to local tourism authorities than a proper review.. In fact I was not able to visit the tower simplt because it is normally closed to public. I have to notice that it looks very well preserved from the outside with signs of recent restorations. That is a shame: Torra Matilda is such an interesting spot and it is perhaps the most important monument for the peculiar history of Viareggio. Please make it visitable…
