Medici Fortress is a castle located in Volterra, a medieval city in Tuscany Region, in the center of Italy. It is a beautiful fortress, which you can see from Parco Archeologico Enrico Fiumi. We did not enter to the fortress, but we can see views from it. Nice. (See also Parco Archeologico Enrico Fiumi)

We just walked around and enjoy the shadows and narrow street. You can see the city from a different perspective. Also not so crowded..

I am sure that this would be a very impressive castle but you cannot enter it as it is a prison. You cannot go near it either because of the security fences. Best place for a photo is from the park next to it.

Dominating the skyline of the city, this imposing medieval fortress consists of two castles. The older one was completed in the late 13th century and the second castle was built in the 14th century. It is not open to public, but you can admire its magnificent exterior from the park beneath it.

The imposing Medici Fortress is visible from miles away and characterises the skyline of Volterra. The Fortress was built in the 15th century primarily to keep the city under tight control and to prevent revolts against the Fiorentines. The most Eastern part of the fortress, the Cassero Castle, already extisted. The two fortresses are linked by a stone “curtain wall”. The fortress is used currently as a maximum security prison and tourist visits to the interior are restricted to a few days and a small portion of the buildings. A notable exception is that part used as a restaurant operated by appropriately supervised prisoners.
