Refreshing spot on a hot day
Oct 2020
We visited on a scorching hot day early October and found the gorge beach a beautiful place to cool off and relax. It was just a annoying that the steps down to the river were closed and we had to buy the more expensive tickets for the lift, 6 euros instead of 1,50 for the stairs.
Wading through the cold river and exploring the area around the beach was an amazing experience, the water is maxiumum knee - deep, swimming is not possible. Great place to picnic and sunbathe.
There are toilet facilites at the bar and parking is free.
I hope to be back with more time to do the walking trails following the river.

Unexpected
Jul 2018 • Couples
Having read the reviews we followed advice and parked past the entrance which is on the left as you go towards Francavilla about 3km before the town. There is space for some cars at a turning on the right We got there at 10.30 am and just got a space. Paid 1.30€ each at the tourist information hut and walked down to the gorge. Good tip from TA to avoid the charge for the lift. It is a picnic area for families and couples with paddling in the gorge. Not deep to swim. We were given a map and thought we could walk by the river but the trail is at the top. We set off trying to find a path but not very accessible (not suitable for people with any mobility problems or elderly) so enjoyed the sun sitting on the rocks by the stream. The rocks are interesting and you can walk in the water into the gorge to see the formations. Water is very cold even in 35” heat. Didn’t do the walk and not sure if this was an extra cost due to heat. Would have been very disappointed to pay 16€ for the experience.

Lovely trail

This trail was lovely but sadly not maintained very well. A lot of information signs were sadly missing. But the amazing view at the river makes it totally worth it. We didn't see any other people while we were there so it's not very touristic at all (which I love)

Worth a visit
Aug 2016 • Couples
We went in search of the Gola d'Alcantara expecting it to be remote and quiet. We found a theme park! But it was very interesting. It is very commercialised with a restaurant, shop, quad bikes, gorge walking etc.. We went on the short walk (you can go with a guide if you wish) which takes in various views of the gorge. It is not far but does have a lot of steps so you do need to be mobile. In parts it is a bit tacky - there are models of prehistoric animals which move and roar as you pass - but also educational. We then walked down to the pebble beach - we availed ourselves of the lift to come back up. Then we had an ice cream - very good. Not what we expected but worth a visit if you are in the area.

Spectacular location
Sep 2016 • Couples
Spent a morning here during our visit to Sicily. Stunning location along the river valley with wonderful rock formations and fast running water. The gardens are well laid out with a range of local trees, bushes and flowers. There is an on site restaurant, toilets, shop and café. The parking is free apart from a small donation of your choice. Lots of activities available for the younger energetic visitors.
