Short, nice visit
Jun 2019
Maybe it is not a big collection, but it is certainly worth of seeing and discover local artists’ masterpieces, like Watteau and others. It is just one floor divided into several exhibition halls. Great museum anyway, paintings and sculptures are the main work on exhibition. Entrance fee was €$6. The building was constructed early in the 20th century, and after renovation, the Museum reopened in 1995. It holds a collection of Gallo-Roman paintings from ancient years, Flemish paintings (Rubens, Van Dyck, others), paintings from the 18th century (local artist Watteau in particular), and sculptures from the 19th century (Carpeaux, mainly), among other artwork. The surrounding area is nice, too. The only thing is that the day I visited the place (Wednesday), there was a market behind the museum that someway obstructed the view of the back side of the building and its architecture.

Worth a Visit
Jun 2019 • Friends
I was taken here for a couple of hours, on a Sunday afternoon, by my honorary French daughter. It was clean, tidy and beautifully decorated.
Although not a large museum/art gallery it contained many grand and excellent paintings by artists including Rubens, Bruegel, Van Dyke, etc, all very well displayed and not over-crowded. There was plenty of space to move around and step back to get better views of the exhibits.

Shut
Jul 2018 • Couples
Following a big exibition they simply closed up for the holidays no note on the door or anything. We only found out the reason at the tourist office. Why do tourist attractions and hotels and restaurants in France always shut during the holiday season and open when noone wants to come

Beautiful museum, lovely staff.

Avoid going during school hours. Too many groups of school children. There is a convenient parking lot just next to the museum.

Run for the 100 objects exhibition
Jun 2018 • Solo
There is an excellent exhibition called "The history of the world in 100 objects from the British Museum" that will last until July. I was very impressed by this exhibition. The quality and importance of some of the objects is quite remarkable. Commentary is presented in French and English and it is an activity that you can do in one hour and half. The rest of the museum is Ok. It's strength is the Flemish painters (Rubens) and a large selection of sculptures. The neoclassical building is in a nice area of the city. On Saturdays there is a nice open air market behind the museum. Definitively, Valenciennes is a nice day trip from Lille.

Excellent Museum
Dec 2017 • Friends
The Museum of Fine Arts of Valenciennes has a rich collection of Flemish paintings and a rich collection of Northern French paintings and sculptures. The most famous artists are Rubens, Rembrandt, Bosch, Watteau and Carpeaux. The museum is small - you could see everything in one hour -, but beautiful. And the whole structure was renovated only a few months ago!

Fair number of historic paintings, particularly the Reuben room, and a room of practice statues including the rough for the statue outside one of the churches.

Interesting Visit
Oct 2016 • Solo
A good place to enjoy the work of local artists and their works. Works of Watteau are of the main attraction. And also the flemish paintings. The staff is very friendly.
A small note: They don't accept cards. Be sure to carry paper money ;)

On the whole, art lovers will like this place.

Fantastic paintings and sculptures by local artists, especially by Watteau. You can get on the tram at stop Andre Parent with is located near to Le Grand Duc and disembark at Hotel Du Ville for only a short walk to the Museum.
