Simple, peaceful, solid Norman architecture. Tourists are to be quiet. A working abbey. Beautiful at day, with the sea about, and all lit up and beautiful at night.
We liked going in mid-January. Few tourists there.
An enormous amount of history at this site. Really well worth the visit, though there is a fair bit of climbing and walking through the Abbey and its various chapels. The views from the top are spectacular. Efficient navette bus service too.
Free for kids, €10 for adults, the visit is amazing. Unbelievable and really interesting for kids too. If you have time please take a guide. The views are terrific and when you think they started the construction at the 10th century you will be amazed
This is such a magical place. Its worth the 10e (plus 3 for audioguide) to get into the abbey. In January the abbey was not too crowded in the morning, but the main commercial street was horrid - you could not move at all. The...More

I had always wanted to visit here since my first year studying French in Junior High. I wrote a paper on it back then. It is pretty amazing how it was built and added to time and again. Awesome views from the top.

The tides vary and every hotel has a calendar. You do not need to be super fit but the abbey is not really handicapped accessible. If you need to go slowly, the crowd will just walk around you. It is steep but there are not too many stairs. Take your time and take in the views as you ascend. Also, the Main Street is lines with shops so you can pace yourself as you climb. Enjoy!
