Off Piste - Experienceyou are not in a typical ski resort...By exploring the domain of La Grave-La Meije, you are not in a typical ski resort. This is a real mountain environment as you head down in an unmarked, and non-patrolled area at your own risk. You must be aware of all mountain hazards including rocks, avalanches, crevasses, and be ready for the possibility of drastic weather changes. In 30 minutes, the cable-car (téléphérique) takes you to 3200m, where you can create your own itinerary for the descent. You can choose from vast glacial escapes to steep chutes, a world away from the marked trails, the ropes, and the signs of a ski resort. Let your skill level and your inspirations guide you.

If you enjoy skiing off piste then this is the Mecca of freeride skiing. Really not for the faint hearted. No piste no be found. Not many people skiing, really you can ski for 40 mins and not see anyone. If you've not skied here before get a guide. You will also need helmet and transceiver it's really stupid not... More

Quite expensive but worth it for the views. After taking the trip to the glaciers come back to the mid station. There is a nice walk to a lake and auberge (45mins) followed by a stroll down the mountain. 8km in total

Somehow expensive (23€ per adult, up & down, no reduction for >65 years old) but very good service. Nice cafeteria in the upper station

We took the telepherique to the first level, Gare Peyrou d'Amont, and walked across to the lac du Puy Vachier - some scrambling over rocks and through pockets of snow - and then made our way down to La Grave. The way was sign posted quite well. The highlight was the fantastic wild flowers which changed as we descended. Wonderful... More

Locals say this place is exceptional and it surely feels like it. A very different world from the typical kilometers of groomed slopes you can find in all the generic alpine resorts. It's all about being laid back and enjoying some fine riding in high alpine terrain. The lift is ridiculous - old prototype with quite a low capacity that... More

Took the first lift up for a hike around La Meije. The lift was very old, stopped very often leaving the carts bungling at high altitudes and doors would not close completely. My girlfriend almost passed out being that scared... I'll prefer to find my way through Les 2 Alpes next time or just walk up. I'd say, it's time... More

La Grave.... say's it all. Every time I hit this mountain I am in awe. Forget the ESF guides and try and hook up with the extreme operators in the village. The lift is a disaster as well as the amenities on the mountain but that's not what you are here for. Go right off the lift and the off... More

Great views, nice ice sculptures in summer. Trails were good. Refuges had drinks and food for good prices.
