A true hidden gem

Off the beaten track and mostly overlooked this small musuem just off the main market square in Goslar has a unique cure and colorful figures of many tin painted in colors and put in many historic story of Goslar town history. But the most impressive ones here for us are many painted tin figures in many famous folktale stories of Germany including the red hat lady, snow white and seven dwarfs.

I can't add much to the last few reviews. If you remember the toy solders of your youth (or the "military miniatures" of more recent years) these are of the type called "flats".
Much more than just military figures of course; very detailed and skillfully painted. It may sound silly but the fairytail quiz was fun too. Low key, relaxed - very pleasant.

I got part way through this museum before I realized there was an audio guide. I wish the man at the desk had mentioned it. It would have been helpful, as I'd just done a thorough tour of the Kaiserspfalz and wasn't up to a lot of reading. On the other hand, the audio tour at the Kaiserspfalz was a big help in understanding the historical displays here. I can't imagine how young children would fare, as the displays were at adult height, and mostly very complex. Did I miss something on the process of making the figures? Did watch a man on the first floor painting a not-so-small figure.

Good English Audio Guide of Goslar History

The displays are intricate and the figures beautifully painted. You do need the gratis English audio guide if you don't speak or read German, but overall experience explains the historic context of Goslar very well. Allow plenty of time.

I only visited this museum because there was a joint ticket with Goslar Museum. What a surprise it was!. Through a series of brilliant models, the history of Goslar is told in a very interesting and engaging way. To make it even better, there is a free audio guide in English and I noticed that children had audio guides as well. The ticket officer was very helpful and informative, obviously very committed to promoting the museum. This is one museum in Goslar that should not be missed - especially if you are touring with children.

I loved this little museum for the interesting history about Goslar and the impressive toy soldier dioramas. The free audio guide in English or German which comes with the four Euro adult entrance fee provides a lot of background on the history of the city, which is also told throughout the different displays which are very well done.

My favorite dioramas was the series on the Thirty Years War, especially one of an immense battlefield which had hundreds of figures.

You can also buy some figures or even some mini dioramas at the museum shop..

I only wish I had a little more time and started our day in Goslar here in order to get the historical background first. Highly recommended

Best attraction during the whole day

Nice, small, educational. Definitely worth of money spend.
This is good place to do parents and kid knowledge completion on fairy tales - place where books beats TV and Simpsons. There is a wall with different scenes from fairy tales, and you have to guess them properly. Yess, Puss in Boots was easy, but parents won with huge handicap.
Take your time, especially if it is raining, discover art of making figures, learn mining history, enjoy peace and calmness.

Not only in this museum in a lovely setting beside a stream and quaint old houses, it has some amazing scenes with tin figures as part of street scenes, historical events and even modern figures from movies. Watch your head on upper floors as rafters are very low! You can get a combined ticket with the Goslar Town Museum for 6 euros-and the latter is far bigger than it appears with some amazing medieval collections, plus displays showing the history of the town. It includes a very moving section on local Jews and what happened to them during the Nazi period. Although the captions for the exhibition are only in German, the information Desk has a folder with excellent English explanations-well worth a visit!

I have seen many dsiplays of tin figures that try to impress with numbers. What I liked here was the careful selection of themed dioramas and the high quality of each and every figure on display. You could also learn quite a lot about the history of Goslar and its surroundings. Very enjoyable.
