Overview
More
The Simplon Pass (French: Col du Simplon; German: Simplonpass; Italian: Passo del Sempione) (2,005 m or 6,578 ft) is a high mountain pass between the Pennine Alps and the Lepontine Alps in Switzerland. It connects Brig in the canton of Valais with Domodossola in Piedmont (Italy). The pass itself and the villages on each side of it, such as Gondo, are in Switzerland. The Simplon Tunnel was built beneath the vicinity of the pass in the early 20th century to carry rail traffic between the two countries. The lowest point of the col, and the lowest point on the watershed between the basins of the Rhone and the Po in Switzerland lies in marshland about 500 m (1,640 ft) west of the Simplon Pass settlement at an altitude of 1,994 m or 6,542 ft.[2] Rotelsee is a lake located near the pass at an elevation of 2,028 m (6,654 ft).

Drove over the pass returning from Italy and had great views. Plenty of overtaking opportunities on a route much frequented by trucks. Cafe at summit indifferent.

Do this, the vistas are amazing and you get a great taste of Switzerland. It was one of the few places in Switzerland that actually had regular pull offs to be able to stop and enjoy the view.

Love the drive here, so much to see. Sometimes just stop and look at the views, listen to the silence or hear motor bikes or performance cars racing up the bends.

Beautiful drive from Switzerland to Italy. The road winds its way from Brig with scenic views of meadows and mountains. At the top, an eagle stature, constructed during the first world war guards Switzerland with bell ringing cows freckling in a meadow just below. The...More

We went to Domodosolla by bus and wandered round the town. Great little town and very cheap drinks. Came back by bus rather than the train so we could get off at the pass and spend some time admiring the views.

We drove from Brig, Switzerland to Milan, Italy. We gave fantastic weather, although probably too hot it was very clear. Throughout the climb and decent the rise feels safe the whole time. The views of snow capped mountains and waterfalls delight at each turn. Plenty...More
