Gruyères Castle has stood proudly atop a verdant hill in the heart of Switzerland since the 13th century. Surrounded by the magnificent panorama of the Alpine foothills, the medieval fortress houses prestigious collections that bear witness to its long and rich history. The treasures to be found within its walls include the capes of the Order of the Golden Fleece and the intricate stained-glass windows dating from the Middle Ages; the frescoes commissioned by the bailiffs under the Ancien Régime; paintings by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and the troubadour decorations of the Salle des Chevaliers, created at Gruyères in the 19th century by a colony of passionate artists.

From its ramparts to its French-style gardens, from the guard room to its romantic salons, Gruyères Castle takes you on an adventure through eight centuries of art, history and legends.

You can spend hours exploring this truly remarkable castle with it's historic tapestries and artifacts. Each room provides a unique and amazing glimpse into how these families lived, loved, fought and persevered. Of course Gruyere is also home to one of the most famous cheeses in the world. So whether it's history, or food, this is a good bet for... More

If you are in Geneva, Gruyere is only an hour drive and it's a must see! The castle is surrounded by one small narrow street that's full of shops and restaurants as well as a hotel. The area is preserved to show the historic nature of the place. Lots of sightseeing and history to explore. It's a beautiful place! Would... More

I loved touring around the town and Castle of Gruyere. I had a day touring on my own, and loved walking around the perimeter of the Castle, as well as exploring inside. The rooms are gorgeous, and the view of the gardens and surrounding countryside was so so beautiful. I loved everything about it except for the little movie that... More

A lovely castle in the most beautiful setting. The tour was very well set out and easy to follow. The castle is maintained well and has information to read in a few languages. Well worth a visit if you are travelling in the area. Gruyere is a lovely hill top village with no cars that is well worth driving off... More

Don't miss the 20 minute video it is quite entertaining. I think I like the stories and the views most about this castle. It is at the top of a Medieval city and is part historical, part art gallery and part a painted time line of it's history as artists have lived in it and painted the walls. 16th century... More

It was out of the way. It was mixed with modern art in some areas that seemed to mismatch with the originality of the castle. But, it was open, not restrictive, and you could get closer to the exhibits and take pictures. I've been to better castles and I've been to worse. The view was awesome, of course we always... More
