We visited my partners great uncle Corporal Lawrence Lush DCM from Wallop who died in January 1944 for what we believe was the first visit by the family and we won’t forget it.
Corporal Lush was awarded the DCM for his bravery in action. He sadly died of his wounds after being injured in action several days later. He was much missed by his family and is still talked about to this day. He was very brave and we were very proud to visit his final resting place and pay our respects on behalf of his family.
Another reviewer asked if someone could take a photo of the grave of Private John Donovan who by coincidence was buried in the row in front of Lawrence. I have uploaded a photo of his grave. We also paid our respects on behalf of his family.
I noticed all of the graves have individual poems, religious quotes, wording, etc on them. This is because the families/next of kin were asked for wording for the graves by those who established the cometary. The wording would have been chosen by their next of kin, many of whom sadly would never visit their child, spouse or relatives grave.
Private Lush was buried in plot 7, row j, grave 7. There are 2000 graves split over 8 similar size plots. 4 plots on either side of the central memorial. The graves are easy to find. The end graves are marked, for example the end grave of plot 7 row J is marked with 7 J on the side of the end grave stone telling you that is plot 7 row j which helps and you then walk along the row until you find the grave you want to find.
At the end of the entrance path and central in the cemetary is a small building with what looks like a post box in the middle. It is easy to miss but inside this it contains the visitors book which tells you where they are buried if you’ve not already found it on the commonwealth graves website. You can also sign a visitors book also contained within this pillar box.
The cemetery was impeccably kept as other reviewers have said and it was very moving to see all the graves and their young ages.
We visited from Sorrento. We got the train from Sorrento to Naples Garibaldi which took just over an hour. Naples central is upstairs in the same station and upstairs from the vesuvius train line which goes between Sorrento and Naples. The Naples station sold us a single ticket for 5.50 euros from Naples central to Minturno Scala. I am not sure why they did not sell us a return for 11 euros but we bought a single for 5.50 euros later from Minturno to get back so it wasn't important as it was the same price. The journey to Minturno Scala took an hour from Naples.
Once there we walked an hour from the station. Basically we crossed the station to the opposite side of the station from the cafe. You then walk towards the coast and downhill away from the Hills for a few minutes until you reach the main road which is the SS7 connecting Rome and Naples. From there turn left and walk out of town for an hour and eventually you reach the cemetery. We ignored google earth saying walk down the small access road just before the cemetery and stayed on the main road. The route google sends you would take you to the main car park at the back of the cemetery but we simply stayed on the main road which was much easier and entered via the main road entrance with the columned entrance next to a hotel (which was shut in October and I assume is only opened in the summer season). You see a Roman aqueduct just before you reach the cemetery . If it helps I've downloaded a photo of Minturno which shows the town map and the map is very helpful.

We were in Sorrento this year and had recently found out my Dad's cousin was buried in Minturno. We decided to visit as we knew no one from the family had ever been able to and we too found the grave easily. The cemetery and the entrance up to the graves is immaculate. The caretaker/Gardner was tending the graves when we were there and I was able to shake his hand and thank him for his care. I was greatly moved by the compassion he showed to us, it is good to know that the graves of the young men who died are so well cared for. Thanks to the War Graves Commission and the people of Minturno.

Myself, my husband, 15 yr. old son, father in law and mother in law visited the cemetery to find my husbands great uncles grave. Very poignant trip as our son, my husband and his father were all together to pay their respects to a family member who lost his life fighting for his country. The grounds itself are beautiful and so peaceful. The groundsmen obviously take care and tend to the graves with respect and dignity. We used a tour company (pleasant travel) to take us on a return journey from Naples to Minturno via monte Casino as I was unsure of trains and bus to and from the station. A wonderful and emotional experience all round.

Exactly what you'd expect from the CWGC - remembrance and respect in a garden like setting. Absolutely superb - and don't miss the Roman aquaduct that runs down the side of the cemetry.

This was the first time my Sister and myself had the opportunity to go and visit our Grand Fathers grave.
The Cemetery is so well cared for and we found the grave immediately. Although we had not been before we felt so much better knowing the care and compassion shown by the War Graves Commission a the kind people who look after these / our heroes.

Have wanted to visit my uncle's war grave in this cemetery for years & it was a major part of our holiday to Sorrento. My late Dad's eldest brother, Private Thomas Ready, of Brampton, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, eldest of 8 children, joined the Sherwood Foresters regiment underage during the Second World War. He bravely fought through North Africa & Sicily, having had to join the Lincolnshire Regiment, before being wounded in Italy & dying in January 1944 at the age of 20. He has always been remembered by our family & many of the boys in our family have Thomas as their 1st or 2nd name, including my son. My grandparents were taken by the Royal British Legion after the war to visit his grave & only a couple of my relatives have visited since. It would have meant a lot to my late Dad that we went as he was inspired to later join the Army in tribute to his eldest brother.
We did a lot of pre-planning & research for our visit as Minturno is a long way from Sorrento. We decided not to travel by train as though the 1 hour journey from Sorrento to Naples then another hour from Naples to Minturno isn't too bad there is then a 1 hour walk from Minturno railway station to the War Cemetery & another hour's walk back, this would have been too much for us in the hot June sun when we visited. My husband bravely volunteered to hire a car & drive the 3 of us to Minturno, this took 2 hours door to door. He used his SatNav & the route from Sorrento to the motorway was rather hazardous due to the insane scooters & motorbikes overtaking dangerously constantly. However as soon as you're on the motorway the drive was fine, be aware of tolls but it's only a few euros each. Also please check your car hire details as 1 of the conditions of ours was to stay in the Campania region of Italy, however Minturno military cemetery is just over the border in Lazio !!! My husband again saved the day by finding out that the river Garigliano has the border going through it & it is only 6 minutes walk to the cemetery if you park on the Campania side & walk over the bridge, thus not invalidating your car insurance !
As for the cemetery itself it was so beautifully kept, immaculate & serene, it was such an emotional visit. From the stone columns at the entrance there's a magnificent lawn bordered by trees leading up to a white stone memorial then a beautiful stone cross with the over 2,000 graves laid out on each side. The graves were planted with colourful flowers & were so well kept, thank you so much to the gardeners, it was easy to locate my uncle's grave. There's a small stone building on the left on the way up that houses a book of remembrance with everyone's details & location of all the graves if you haven't already looked it up as well as a visitors book. We had researched what you were allowed to take & had bought 2 wooden British Legion crosses that I had written tributes on, we took lots of photos & I cried buckets to finally be able to pay tribute to our brave uncle that we never had a chance to know. We are beyond proud of our Uncle Thomas & all the brave young men that gave their lives for our freedom & are so grateful to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for keeping the cemetery so immaculately, thank you all .

Such a moving experience to come here & pay respects to my Uncle Lawrence Ellis & to bring my Mum (her brothers grave) and my Dad both at 88 years old, to see his last resting place. The War Graves Commission & the local workers & volunteers do such a fabulous job of maintaining the cemetery & showing that these young men are being forever cared for

In all honestly, we only visited as we were taken there by friends, but the Minturno War Cemetery was a very beautiful and calm experience for us all. It is beautifully kept and very clean and tidy.

Good evening,
I am visiting Sorrento this July and I am looking to travel to the cemetary to visit my uncles grave, could you please tell me how you got there as there does not seem to be a lot of information on transport options.
Many thanks, Phill & Gaynor

We got a private taxi from Sorrento to Minturno, we arranged the taxi through the tourist office in Piazza Santa Antonio. It is quite expensive but you have to travel to Naples and then on to Minturno However we thought it was worth it, the cemetery is quite out of the way. But we were so glad we went, you won't regret it. The taxi picked us up at our hotel and he waited while we were in the cemetery for over an hour.Patricia
