We visited here on a week day morning, so virtually did not see other tourists wandering around this extra small village. We spotted a couple of elderly residents but that was all. Evidence of Roman Times all through the village. Make sure you walk the...More

We have visited 5 villages that day and this was the least picturesque (Sortelha was the nicest, we think).

This village is one among the 12 oldest Portuguese villages. It was founded by Roman and it is possible to see a Roman bridge, parts of Roman roads and colums from houses or temples. It seems to be a place that stopped in time!

Aldeia Tipica de Portugal! Its a small town so you'll easily visit it. There are some archeological digging going on near the church so if you are into the subject you'll like it. Check also Monsanto.

I was really hoping to see the Visigoth church which is the village's main attractions and the main reason why I chose to visit this place. It was however closed and the tourism office told me the owner of the keys was the only one...More

Idanha a Velha ('Old Idanha') goes back to pre-Christian times and has a Romano-Christian basilica of international note. There is also a 2000 year old bridge dating to the days that this was on a pilgrimage route. Lovely town and architecture but hardly the centre...More
