What a beautiful story teller this gentleman is. He blows his horn at 9pm every night of the year(so he tells us) He talks about the history of Ripon and the tradition of blowing his horn in an amusing and informative way. Lovely, unusual experience.

A must see if you go to Ripon, an integral part of history. The Hornblower will blow the horn at the 4 corners of a statue and then proceed to tell you the reason and history behind the tradition. He even does a selfie with the group that shows up to see him and the posts it to the Facebook... More

a cold frosty evening but well worth waitng for. a crowd of perhaps 15 -20 people had gathered round the town hall and were rewarded by a really informative and amusing talk, only lasted about 10 minutes but really great.

After sounding his horn, the Hornblower will give a warm welcome to all attendants, and a brief history of the tradition he represents along with an entertaining summary of Ripon's history.

We did not know about the horn blower until we went in to the pub with the same name, he can certainly handle his horn and he plays it very well, great tradition.

We have been to Ripon and seen this on our last visit but would not have missed it again this time. The gentleman this time was older but the way he told the story was lovely. He told it with humour and you wouldn't think he had been doing it over and over again as he was great to listen... More

We were told about the Hornblower by our hotel and so decided to go and see him at 21:00. The short ceremony has been performed every night since the middle ages. Although a very short event the Hornblower himself gave an interesting and amusing talk at the end. It is good to support true local history events like these so... More

This is a must see ritual that is performed, and has been performed, over the last 1000 years. As well as the ritual there is a talk about it given by the hornblowers themselves. If interested you can see videos of them on YouTube BUT nothing beats seeing it done live.

Well worth stepping out at 9pm to see the Hornblower. A friendly, funny hornblower provided an interesting summary of the history of The Hornblower.
