The buildings were beautiful to walk around as were the grounds. The accompanying exhibitions which give a very necessary introduction to the importance of salt throughout history was also great. When we were there, a TinTin exhibition was also showing so it was a double treat! Works of Herge, showed his development from a young age and how his iconic... More

We visited the Arc-et-Senans by chance while doing a weekend motorbike trip in Jura and now are happy for the coincidence. La Saline Royale complex is a masterpiece of architecture, very well preserved and maintained place with nice gardens and expositions. The night music and light show Lux Salina, where it looked like all town population is performing, was a... More

This is a wonderful site. If you love architecture, photography or gardens. Or come to one of the concerts. There is not much in English but they are very encouraging when you try to speak French.

I visited the Royal Saltworks and found it well worth the trip. The site is impressive architecturally and historically important, as it was designed to be something of a model factory/village. For those interested in 18th century notions of efficiency and oversight, the "panopticon" style, allowing the manager to oversee virtually all activity is something to see. Nice, detailed audioguide;... More

Wonderful visit to this Unesco Site. The history of the site spans 120 years around the french revolution, the socioeconomic context is very rich. There is indeed so much to see, we spent 1.5 hours with a tour guide, and probably another hour before and after visiting the grounds and the temporary exhibit. You must have see the exhibit on... We spent at least two and a half hours at the Royal Salt works, there is so much to see. The audio guide and displays were packed full of information and we discovered so many things about salt! The buildings, designed by Ledoux, were beautifully restored and the whole layout is quite stunning. The different small gardens around the site... More

My wife had often talked about visiting the Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans (La Saline Royale) so we took a couple of days off and drove down. To fully appreciate this unusual edifice, you should visit La Grande Saline - Musee du Sel - at Salins-les-Bain a few kilometres away first because the salt-saturated waters were pumped from there (via hollow... A guided tour will take you through most buildings and explain why the thinking of why the architect, Ledoux, built this place in this unusual layout. Our tour was in French, not sure about other languages. While there is no salt to see, nor any of the equipment used to process it at the time, the place still gives you... More

As we were in the area (and got free tickets), we visited the Royal Saltworks. The buildings are quite impressive and architects will be delighted. Otherwise, the expositions are ok but not great.
