We had a great time walking to Clifden Castle and exploring the ruins. It's a bit of a hike down a well-marked driveway, but the scenery is spectacular and the castle ruins are wide open for independent exploration. Highly recommended!

Great experience! Open to the public and free. Easily accessible. This is one of the better ruin-type castles to see.

Connemara is (just about) starting to get its act together in terms of encouraging visitors to stay and look around, but this is an example of where they could add so much more without too much expense or effort. A signpost to the castle would be a good start, an information board to at least say something about its history... More

Not really obvious how you get to this old castle, but there is a path along the water and over a few gates. Worth the short walk.

Fun to visit - but be warned! This lovely ruin is messy to visit (wet and muddy underfoot) and is on private farmland. The farmer has very kindly fenced and graveled the path and visitors are encouraged. Note the standing stones along the path as you meander your way around to the castle site. It would seem that there were... More

We stopped at Clifton Castle on our drive through the Connemara region. It was totally by chance but it looked fun and so we parked on the dirt road and walked the long lane leading to the castle. We were pretty much the only people there so it was great to explore the whole area in peace. It's not your... More

I know, I know. It rains in Ireland a LOT... BUT, the path to this castle could use another layer of gravel or something to help with the mud. Granted, it had been raining quite a bit the day before and the day that I visited, so maybe it's not always as bad as it was the day I was... More

Stunning views on the walk to and from the ruins - especially on a lovely day. We had lovely weather, but I imagine that this would be just as good on most days. The walk down and back allows plenty of photo opportunities and it's a treat to be able to explore the ruins freely. It was still a little... More

It's a nice walk up to this castle. Even though it was very wet the day that we visited the castle itself is gorgeous. Well worth a walk down to it, it's open and can be freely explored. If only the weather was better I would've spent a lot more time at the site. Definitely glad that I visited while... More
