Built by the O'Flahertys c. 1500, Aughnanure Castle lies in picturesque surroundings close to the shores of Lough Corrib. In 1546 the O'Flaherty's motto "Fortune favours the strong" and the powerful Mayo O'Malleys Motto "Powerful by land and by sea", were joined in the marriage of Donal an Chogaidh O'Flaherty and Grainuaile/Grace O'Malley. Standing on what is virtually a rocky island, the castle is a particularly well-preserved example of an Irish tower house. In addition, visitors will find the remains of a banqueting hall, a watch tower, an unusual double bawn and bastions and a dry harbour.

Even so the castle tower itself is quite empty you get a lot of information about the castle itself and Irish history

We really enjoyed our tour north of Galway to Aughnanure Castle. Since we had a car we wanted to get out and explore a bit of the countryside from Galway. It's a neat castle and you can get inside and go up several levels. We even found a unique Geocache next to a very old Yew tree on the property.

This is a nice castle site, that has been preserved well. There are storyboards explaining the history. Not sure it's quite worth the 5 Euro each entry as there is really only the castle and a small site to walk around, but I guess it costs a lot to maintain and preserve. Toilets in good condition, but no other facilities... More

We visited this castle having been to the mines and it well worth a stop. Lots of history and the castle has been well maintained. Lovely fireplaces inside and lots of interesting areas to explore. The grounds are well maintained and on a nice sunny day you can sit out and enjoy the scenary, children will enjoy just having a... More

This was recommended by our hosts at Currarevagh House and lived up to expectations. It is not only beautifully restored, it has excellent synopsis of the history and way of life within these fortified homes. We spent half an hour going through the exhibition of Irish surnames looking for all our known relatives surnames, which was an interesting exercise! The... More

We visited Aughnanure Castle last week, a very interesting attraction. The castle is in very good condition, well preserved and has excellent historical information on display. The grounds are very well kept and on a dry day it is a lovely place to walk around or sit about and take in the excellent scenary. As an added bonus the receptionist... More

I was so glad we stopped here during our recent visit to this area. What a beautiful old building and very lovingly maintained. You get a real sense of history here. Worth the small admission price to keep this open for visitors.
