This is truly an amazing little museum tucked quietly away in Straffan, Co. Kildare. Search it out as it is an experience that will linger with you for a long time. Set in a Victorian gothic church building (moved there brick by brick by the owners, the Guinness family), the museum houses many beautiful scale models of steam locomotives. You... More

I've lived in Kildare all my life and never knew this place existed. As part of Culture Night 2015, myself and a friend paid a visit. Wow, what a place. It's full of the most incredible steam machinery from bygone days. It also has many scale models of steam trains and a large model train displayed by staff who obviously... More

This museum is well worth a detour to visit. I am not interested in steam engines but I do love gardens and the garden here, even in late summer is full of interest and a beautiful, tranquil place to sit or walk. The large room full of intricate models of engines is worth seeing and those of more mechanical minds... More

Thank you very much for your review - we are delighted you enjoyed your visit and we look forward to welcoming you here again. Perhaps next time you might be able to come on a Sunday when the Steaming Kettle Teahouse is open between 2 - 6pm serving delicious homemade cakes and the engines are under full steam! More

We were touring Ireland as part of a Classic Car Tour. On our way from Connemara to Dublin, a stop for lunch had been organised at the Straffan Steam Museum. Whilst lunch was just sandwiches, tea and cakes, which was very good, the highlight was a fascinating conducted tour of the museum. Our guide was very knowledgeable and gave us... More

This place is a little gem tucked away on the Dublin/Kildare border. Some amazing machines that if you go on a Sunday you may be lucky enough to see them up and running, as we did. Kept the husband and son enthralled for a good 45 minutes. Some beautiful old model Trains and some wonderful other things to see. Lovely... More

what a surprise. You have to go at the "steam" times, this is when they run the steam machines. Not miniatures, the real, big, thing. A real treat. And loads of information from the guide. Never boring. The collection of miniatures is fantastic. They are real gems. Glad I went and so did my 12 year old. Boys and their... More

Excellent guides, amazing machines. Went on a Sunday when they were all up and running. Only thing I'd change is that most of the info describing the engines is very technical to the layperson.

This place really blew us away - it is a hidden gem and should be highlighted more. We visited on a Sunday afternoon when the steam engines are fired up. The two volunteers running the engines were funny and brought you through the workings of them in a way that was entertaining and accessible. The kids were facinated to see... More

Thanks so much for your review, we agree the Steam Museum is unique. A museum of steam engines located in a church that has been relocated to Straffan. We are very grateful to our volunteers who man the steam engines during the season. More

What really makes this a wonderful place to visit are the people who work here. Don't miss it. The gentleman who runs the machines is happy to turn things on and explain anything and everything. It is so much better than a static display. I had a nice conversation with the lady who sold us our tickets, it was like... More
