- Colin W2 contributionsVery interesting and informative visit to King Edward Mine museumGreat visit to King Edward Mine Museum. The volunteers are very knowledgeable and we learnt a lot about the minerals, mining methods and extraction. To see some of the mill machinery in operation was excellent. Peter our guide was very knowledgeable and informative and it was fascinating to learn about Cornish mining and geology and see so many working components. We could have spent much longer there than the two hours we had time for, so we will definitely go back. Wonderful friendly volunteers and such a lot to take in.Thank you for posting your comment about Trip Advisor. - Sarah M2 contributionsOutstanding museum about Cornish mining historyOutstanding museum about Cornish mining history that far surpassed our expectations. If you are interested in mining history and it’s social history you really must visit here. Included in the admission price of £10 per adult was a really excellent tour of the museum by our tour guide Liz who bought the museum artefacts and displays to life. So pleased we visited.Thank you so much for your 5 star review. I'm so pleased that you had such a wonderful visit. I will pass on your comment to Liz who is one of our volunteer guides. - BOXNUTTERAxminster, United Kingdom56 contributionsGreat value, lengthy and informative tour.Fantastic informative place to visit. Good value for money considering our tour lasted over 2 hours. Our 7yr old enjoyed his visit and asked lots of questions from a very good guide. 👍Thank you for your 5 star review on Trip Advisor. We are so pleased that your 7 year old enjoyed his visit. Museums can be tedious for young people, especially if they have a lot of engineering, but we are thrilled that he enjoyed his visit. - Munchy476326 contributionsA really good experienceI went here with a 7 year old child thinking he'd probably be bored but it would while away an hour on a mizzley day. How wrong I was. My 7 year old was given a sheet with pictures on and a pencil and had to find all the objects, which he had so much fun doing with another child on the tour. The tour guide, Liz, was absolutely brilliant and was really knowledgeable and explained how all the machinery worked and also talked about the social history aspect of the mining community. It was so interesting, we went around twice! There was lots of interactive things for kids to do, automatons, buttons to press, paper rubbing etc. At the end a lady took his piece of paper and gave him a prize for finding all the items. He was so happy and we had a really interesting and informative day out.Thank you for your five star review of King Edward Mine. Your comments are really useful for our guides to find out what works for a 7 year old. I will pass this on to our volunteer guide, Liz who has a deep knowledge of the social history of Cornish mining. She will be so pleased to know that you enjoyed all the interactive things that we have developed to make the visit interesting and fun for young people.Written 4 July 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 May 2024

It was really interesting to go around with our guide David who made the museum come alive with his tour. Didn't meet a member who wasn't friendly. Please give them your support.Thank you for your five star review. This helps us to publicise our museum and our enthusiastic volunteer guides. We also have a big outside team who maintain our 22 acres of mining landscape and an engineering team who maintain our Grade II* buildings, working Cornish Tin Mill and 1908 Holman Winding Engine. I'm sure David will be delighted that you enjoyed his tour.Written 4 July 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 June 2024
- Pamela HKidderminster, United Kingdom108 contributionsGreat experienceWe all had a fantastic time visiting King Edward Mine Museum including our little dog, who was allowed to join us everywhere. That's what we like. The volunteer guide Liz was so knowledgeable and it was very personal as her family had worked at this mine. Cornwall has so much to offer to visitors and this is amongst the best we have experienced. Well done to all involved in keeping this museum available to everyone to learn about the history of mining. Many thanksThank you so much for your five star review. I will pass on your comments to liz, one of our volunteer guides. We don't receive any public financial support so your visit helps to support the presentation of the site and keep our antique mining machinery moving.Written 7 August 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 July 2024
- Havard L7 contributionsMust see in Cornwall to understand its historyAlan was an excellent guide who lent us three hours of his life, even though the guided tour was only supposed to last 1,5. One of the best museums I've ever been to, with all the original parts and the actual functioning machinery that they activated. This is like a 3 star Michelin restaurant: worth the trip in itself. Simply go!Thank you for your 5 star review and I will pass on your comments to Alan, one of our volunteer guides. We are so pleased that you had a good three hour tour and that you are recommending this to others. As we receive no public funding, it is our visitors who keep us going and enable us to preserve our wonderful Cornish Mining Heritage.Written 7 August 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 July 2024
- Titch CSwindon, United Kingdom4 contributionsfascinating insight into historical miningWe had a fantastic time at the mine museum. The staff are absolutely lovely and the guides are extremely knowledgeable. The machinery is incredible - the demonstration of the tin separator was especially good. Other machines are shown running, although unloaded as they are very old - one is apparently around 300 years old! The accessibility isn't too bad - as a historic site and a former working mine, there is a lot of uneven terrain but I was able to get round the whole thing on my crutches, and now that I've got a wheelchair with a powered trike attachment (which we picked up on our way back from Cornwall), I suspect I'd have got round ok on that, although obviously would have had to use the level access to the Mill. All in all a fascinating way to spend a few hours and lovely staff and volunteers :)Thank you for your five star review. We are so glad that you all had a fantastic time at King Edward Mine. it sounds as if you were able to manage on your crutches. For anyone else who might have some mobility issues, we have an accessibility guide on our website and we can accommodate wheelchairs. We are also really pleased that you were able to enjoy all our working machinery and that our guides were lovely. Please spread the word to anyone visiting Cornwall that it is a gem.Written 7 August 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 August 2024

What a fabulous visit! I was a bit skeptical about visiting a mine on a rainy day (wouldn’t be top of my list!) but we had such a great time. You have to have a guided tour because some of the machinery is dangerous and I was a bit worried about this - some tour guides at museums just love the sound of their own voice and don’t tailor to children, or gauge the reaction of their audience but Jon was amazing! Understated but massively knowledgable and asked / gauged how much info we wanted. A great mix of old and new tech/exhibits and interactive pieces versus more traditional info boards etc. I hate it when museums go too interactive, eschewing the more traditional offerings, but this was a good mixture and so amazing to actually see some things working rather than just static displays. The museum and volunteers obviously work really hard to keep things ‘alive’ and with many of the exhibits made, restored or donated by volunteers. We had the museum to ourselves towards the end of closing time but Jon didn’t rush us. We’ll be back! 😊 Well done Kind Edward Mine Museum 🥰
Our only two negatives:
*we couldn’t get into the cafe - food looked amazing and it obviously gets booked by people just coming to the restaurant but it’s not really fair to have a cafe at an attraction you’re visiting that’s then taken up entirely by people not at the attraction
*the shop could do with a few updated / different offerings

A great interesting museum, can easily spend a morning or afternoon there.
The guides are very informative and make tours very interesting.
And great to see mining machinery working as well.
There are walks that can be done from the museum into the local mining landscape too.
Definitely worth a visit!

We could have spent hours in this fascinating tin mining museum, guided by passionate and knowledgeable volunteers who told us everything we needed to know about the Cornish tin mining industry. Working machinery, well labelled exhibits and a pleasant café on site. We followed our visit to the museum with a 3-hour hike on the Great Flat Lode Trail which also took us up to Carn Brea and the Basset Monument.

This museum is a gem. We had a wonderful guide (Wayne) who gave us a very detailed and thoughtful tour and very patiently answered all of our questions. The museum displays were informative and interesting and told about the mining process and the life of the miners and the mine owners. I would have liked to have had more time to spend in the room where the separating equipment is kept. This was a highlight of our visit to Cornwall. Even if you don’t have a particular interest in the mining process, this museum is just fascinating.

Well worth a visit which deserves to be more widely publicised. (Tourist Information in St. Ives had not heard of this brilliant museum.). Alan, our guide, imparted his knowledge of the tin mining industry and the history of the Kind Edward mine and its importance as a training establishment with enthusiasm, clarity and the odd bit of humour! Their is much to see and the various processes for extracting the tin were demonstrated on original machinery. Totally fascinating and enjoyable and you are left with nothing but great respect for the brave men, women and children who worked the mines over the centuries.

All round informative, enjoyable guided tour around a preserved mine site. Our guide David was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We learnt about the history, engineering and social aspects of mining in Cornwall. We watched demonstrations of the use of various pieces of equipment. The great flat lode trail is a good walk. Friendly staff who have a passion for their subject.

Thank you for visiting. I'm glad that one of our Davids (we have three) was able to share his enthusiasm for our wonderful working museum. We are glad you enjoyed the Great Flat Lode trail. If you come again, please take the free nature trail around our 22 acre site. The ecology is really interesting, with birds, butterflies and wild flowers.

A very interesting tour of the King Edward Mine Museum in Troon, Cornwall. This area of Cornwall, used to have many tin mines. Almost all of them are now closed but demand for tin ( solder) and a rising price will perhaps make some viable again - investigations are being undertaken. This mine museum takes you through the history and the processes to separate the metal from the rock. Our guide, David Ager was really interesting for us grandparents and our grandchildren. We did not visit the cafe as we had food at home. This was a really good place at which to spend two or three hours - highly recommend.

The staff, who are also volunteers are very well informed, make you feel very welcome & will answer many questions you have in detail. There are many things that surprised me today but you will have to visit there to find out! There are motorised models to keep children interested & maybe teach them something about the history & dangers of mining. You can spend as much time as you would like to find out about mining & how they had to involve their families, just to make a 'living'. It was only my Wife & I that went today but I'm sure they would like & deserve parties. It was only £9 each & the £2 left out of the £20 we put in the donations box because they deserve it.

We were in Cornwall for a week with our dogs and wanted to find some activities we could do with them. We found this museum online, saw it had amazing reviews and that dogs were welcome. So off we went.
When we arrived, we entered the reception and immediately welcome by very friendly staff who explained that a tour had just begun and that another would start shortly. It is £10.00 a person and they take cash or card.
Our tour guide was Alan, Alan is extremely knowledgable in regard to the Mines - I am sure he is knowledgable about lots of others things I life but my what he doesn’t know about mines isn’t worth knowing. The tour lasted around 2 hours and he walks you through the social history or mining and also how gin was mined throughout Cornwall.
My wife and I found it so interesting. The mining museum has some working machinery to view which is the only working machinery left in the UK. Which is truly amazing.
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and I did joke with my wife at the end that I think I had learnt so much I could take an exam in Mining history and pass.
They have a virtual reality room where you can wear a headset and see what it was like to be down a mine.
Alan, you made our day with your fantastic tour and we would like to send out thanks to him.
If you are in Cornwall I would highly recommend visiting.
There is a little cafe behind the museum which belongs to the museum. The cakes are awesome - I had cherry Bakewell cake and it is by far the best cake I have had for ages.

Jane,
KEM is closed every winter open May - Sept). Sometimes it is possible to arrange group tours on Sundays in winter when the volunteers are on site. However, this year there is extensive restoration work going on and the museum is more like a building site.
You would be very welcome to come to our Open Day (always last Sunday in April) check website for details in the spring.
Thank you for your interest and hope to see you in 2917.
