My friend and I spent 3 days in Danakil Depression guided by Solomon Hadera.
I must say that it was one of our highlights in ethiopia!
Thanks to him, everything went wonderful and very smooth and we felt safe and comfortable the whole time.
Solomon was incredibly knowledgeable (an endless source of information!), kind and very attentive with respect to our comfort during the whole experience.
He made us feel very comfortable and answered our every question. I enjoyed speaking with him as well on a personal level.
I consider Solomon a friend and I highly recommend him for anyone going to the Danakil Depression or elsewhere in Ethiopia. My friend and I are already planning to go back and can’t wait to have Solomon with us for another great experience.
I know that he will try to make your trip comfortable and full of unique and amazing experiences. You will be saisfied from start to finish!
Solomon can be reached via Whatsapp at +251 91 047 4156 and Solomonhad123@gmail.com.

This was one of the most amazing holidays we have ever had. Every day held something exciting and new. Ethiopia is a fascinating country with its rich culture and diverse landscapes. If I had to choose the most exciting part of the trip is night's sleep under the stars, the journey to Erta Ale volcano .
After spending the night in the campsite near the volcano, we began our descent to the jeeps. Within an hour's drive, we reached another spectacular location: the sulfur lake. Colors unlike I'd ever seen before, mineral nozzles spewing hot water, crisp red earth and a feeling of another planet are all offered by the second of the two top locations in the Danakil Depression.. The formations and colors are endless. This was an unforgettable holiday, one of the best days I have ever spent anywhere!
Highly Recommended!

The Danakil Depression is one of the most fascinating places on Earth. I visited this past March, right before the Covid travel freeze, with my two sons. We flew to Mekele, where we were met by our travel agency, Ethio Travel and Tours. We had our own Landcruiser with a trained guide/driver, and were followed by five other SUVs, with chefs and security guards. We slept on pads under the stars, near the vast salt flats (which seemed like a warm Arctic), near bubbling sulphuric lakes, and finally on the rim of the active Erta Ale volcano, which we descended twice. Our experience was the opposite of 'glamping', but luxury was not the idea. Sounds odd maybe, but the dozen or so travelers in the other SUVs added unimaginably to our experience, total strangers from France, Italy, and Japan, who under these conditions, seemed like longtime friends, especially around the campfires. I've been lucky to travel everywhere over the years, but this was the most unique area I've ever seen.

In our 24 hours in the Danakil, we saw the Great Rift, salt flats and lakes, the "colourful area" (Dalol), and salt canyons that wouldn't look out of place in Monument Valley. The trip is very much worth the effort it is to get guides, 4x4s, security etc.

The landscapes in the Danakil depression are just impressive. This tour leads you to see the sunrise on the geysers, and the sunset on the salted lake Assale, and to trek under the stars to the top of Erta Ale volcano, waiting for the sunrise near the crater. You can also float in salted water pool and observe camel caravans transporting salt blocks.
I had to organise this trip last minute and Hafi Tours did a great job. Very swift and clear communication via WhatsApp. They picked me up at the airport in Mekele and arranged a 3-day and 2-night tour in the Danakil depression, including Erta Ale volcano. Everything was well very organised, including transport in 4x4 LandCruiser, camping equipment, drinking water and meals. Our driver was very kind. Really recommended!

We traveled for a day tour. It is quite far away in the north of Ethiopia, close to the border between Eritrea. It was a wonderful experience to see the nature beauty of this region, walking around active volcanic rocks, hot springs, and seeing the running lava. It is known as the hottest place and the lowest place on earth. The landscape was stunningly beautiful, just that it was so hot there. We felt like walking on a saucepan, so we spent around 3 hours there only.. It is better to follow a local guy to walk around the area as some of the ground is too soft and to hot to walk. It is a must see tourist spot in Ethiopia, highly recommended.

An exciting journey to see the lowest driest and hottest place on earth. Amazing geological formation from volcanic spring. Camel caravan was another highlight carrying salt loaded to town. Sunset at dallol plus overnight camping under the stars! Unforgettable experience and great adventure highly recommend

I traveled Solo to Ethiopia. I met Hafi through his positive TripAdvisor recommendations. We then discussed about tours to do, he have advised with the possibility of tours that I can do. My first trip started from the Simien mountains and end in The Danakil depression. The Danakil depression tour was such a wonderful experiance that I have never had before in my life. I get a good service and it's all because of Hafi. The service was great, food was nice, everyone was so friendly. I greatly appreciate the organization! I recommend to contact Hafi.

Je projette d'aller vers le Danakil et le volcan Erta Ale a l'automne 2021.
Comment sont les conditions climatiques, la chaleur est elle supportable ?
Merci pour vos infos.

torofrollo, can you elaborate on why you were discouraged to do a 4 day tour?

Hello, I had planned to do a 4 day trip to the Danakil Depression, but sadly Urta Ale was very smokey and they deemed it too dangerous to sleep there. Instead Aregawi substituted it with Wukro and the Rock Hewn churches of Tigray. Sad but I plan to go back.

I am going to Ethiopia at the beginning of June. I am hoping to do a Danakil Depression tour but rather than booking in advance I was hoping to fly to Mekele and try and find a 3-day tour leaving the next day - does anyone have any experience with this or know if this is a feasible option? Thanks!!

I would advise you book in advance as in case you are a photographer knowing the type of your budget and knowing detail about your trip will save you from ending up in a super crowded groups. Book with Great Ethiopian Tours

Merci d'avance

What is the toilet situation on this tour? Like... where do you go... if you have to go? 🙈

There are some very basic public toilets at the campsite but they are pretty gross! You will have to take your own toilet paper with you. If you can stomach the public toilets then thats good but if not then find a bush and go behind that.....

August can be Hot, part of what makes the Danakil.
For camel caravan avoid going on Friday and Sunday as its a holy day for both the muslim and christians. there will be less camels caravans in both days.

Is there any way to go to Danakil Depression individually? The lowest price I've heard was USD 250 for 3 days trip and it's a rip-off for me.

I'm not sure that it is even possible to go to Danakil without a group - many locations in Ethiopia require you to have a local "scout" or "guide" as a way of supporting their economy - and it would be extraordinarily dangerous to do so even if you could. That area is very close to the Eritrean border, and you will need to be accompanied by armed guards or military personnel, or you will be at risk of getting shot yourself (putting aside the dangers of being alone in the extreme heat if something were to happen to your vehicle).
Danokil is exceptionally beautiful, and $250 USD for three days seems well worth the price.
