Askernish Golf Course is set on the Isle of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The course was lost for over 70 years before Master Greenkeeper Gordon Irvine accidentally stumbled across it on a fishing trip. It was discovered that this course dated back to 1891 and it was 'old' Tom Morris who designed it. In 2008 the course was re-opened in almost exactly the same set up as it was 117 years ago. At 6,259 yards the course can often be taken for granted, this should be done at your own risk as the last 12 holes has some of the best links golf holes around. If you get a chance, come along and play the course on a Sunday afternoon where you will be invited to play in the weekly competition between the local members. It will be a round and golfing experience never to be forgotten.

Well, I found out about this re-discovered course and took the tiny road to it. Delightfully simple and historic. Clubhouse was closed, but with envelopes to leave your green fee for 6, 12, 18 holes...whatever. No carts, so it was a refreshing walk on a course that has been groomed to 1900 standards. Perfect. Outer Hebrides are amazing, wonderful, quiet,... More

It was a fine sunny/overcast am/pm but windy. Arrived at 0935 it said clubhouse open at 1000 I left at 1005 to start no sign of life and when I returned at 1350 was still closed so no access to locker room or toilets or club shop [missed a few sales]. The course is a good anti clockwise layout with... More

This is the oldest golf course in the Outer Hebrides, designed by the classic creator of Scottish golf courses, Old Tom Morris. This wily genius has laid out a canny, crafty course amongst the twisting dunes that would tie the devil himself in knots.

Nearly all courses have been heavily tweaked over the years while this one has only been stroked. If you like your courses groomed and pampered this is not for you but if you like natural it is.

I walked around with my fiance, who was playing in the Askernish Open. It is a heard walk but every minute is worth it. Being right on the coast, the views address second to none

I carried my clubs and so what if I needed a couple of new knees after the round, it was well worth the sacrifice. Best links course I have ever played. Golf in the raw, yes I have played on better fairways and greens but this was South Uist not Wentworth. I thought there was a gale blowing but the... More

A gem of a golf course for those that appreciate the origins of the game in Scotland and a more wild beautiful setting away from typical over-processed parkland courses. Well worth the trip 😀

We stopped for lunch and found the cafe to be a pleasant place with hospitable attendant. We had a tuna sandwich - one is big enough for two - an egg roll, a scone, and a nice big cupcake. good lunch. By the way, an egg roll is just that, a fried egg on a roll, not like a Chinese... More

A golf buddy and I set out on an adventure to find golf courses in Scotland where we had never played. A tough chore because we've played everywhere you can think of (20 trips in 35 years). The so-called pro shop at Askernish should have been our first clue. But, we were there and we forged ahead. We walked with... More

Looking for slick, super manicured greens and fairways, play elsewhere. Wild crazy fairways thread blindly thru dunes to hidden humpbacks greens, whilst the wind batters you relentlessly. What a joy
