Askernish Golf Course is set on the Isle of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The course was lost for over 70 years before Master Greenkeeper Gordon Irvine accidentally stumbled across it on a fishing trip. It was discovered that this course dated back to 1891 and it was 'old' Tom Morris who designed it. In 2008 the course was re-opened in almost exactly the same set up as it was 117 years ago. At 6,259 yards the course can often be taken for granted, this should be done at your own risk as the last 12 holes has some of the best links golf holes around. If you get a chance, come along and play the course on a Sunday afternoon where you will be invited to play in the weekly competition between the local members. It will be a round and golfing experience never to be forgotten.

Wow. This is a tough and beautiful course, as close to playing golf as it was invented as you can probably get! Gorgeous views along tricky fairways and lots of challenges on devilish greens. I will be dreaming about this course--and getting back there--for a...More

We were hoping to play this course but my partner had a foul cold and so did not feel fit enough. Instead we went for a short walk over the course and afternoon tea in the clubhouse. It was a gorgeous day, so we were...More

Full disclosure: I am a member. First visited and played in 2008. Was told that the course would improve gradually over the years. It definitely has. Been there six times now. The greenkeeper is doing a great job. Tough holes and a hilly second nine...More

I am a keen 8 handicap golfer and so looking forward to a Tom Morris location. The people are really friendly and a nice wee shop. But the course!! Some flattish holes but the 'rough' (machair) includes small ferns which means you almost certainly can't...More

Had the pleasure of playing three rounds last week on a truly unique golf course. As per previous reviews, yes the greens are poor, the tees rough, and if you don't loose your ball amongst the fairway daisies your doing well. Did I mention the...More

Askernish Golf Course is truly a test of you golfing skills. Don't be mislead by the first few holes which are wide and flat. As you get into the course the difficulty increases. Great views on the beach looking over to Barra. Don't be surprises...More

This course is simply wonderful. If you haven't played here your golfing CV is not complete. Not only are there 18 very good holes of which 15 are great you also get to play a course and golf as it was 125 years ago. The...More

Well, I found out about this re-discovered course and took the tiny road to it. Delightfully simple and historic. Clubhouse was closed, but with envelopes to leave your green fee for 6, 12, 18 holes...whatever. No carts, so it was a refreshing walk on a...More
