A two to three hours walk from the fjord to the mountain top (Halde). On a clear day you get a fantastic view. The last part of track is fairly steep but is manageable. There is a cabin at the top that soon is to be managed by Alta og omegn Turistlag

Birkeland, who started scientific research into northern lights and built the observatory, was the initial reason for this trip. His profile was also on 200 crowns ;) The hiking lodge, converted from the observatory, was free for hikers to stay overnight. There was a stove and full set of cooking facilities. I recommend this trip for every one who has a day to spare when visiting Alta. The view is spectacular and the story about the families who lived here from 1899-1926 is a fairytale.

The northern lights observatory on Haldde was the first observatory on the Northern Light. The buildings which are restored, show the life of those who lived and studied the northern lights there. The view from the highest peak in Alta shows a magnificient view, and is an excellent spot to watch the northern lights during winter. Its also a nice... More
