The toll road that you have to drive on to get there wasn’t open, barrier across so you couldn’t get through. It didn’t say why or when it would re-open. There was no snow around and we visited at the end of April but I suppose it could have still been shut from winter? Bare in mind before you try and visit in colder months. We parked just before the toll road and had a wonder through the forests which was a nice walk but a shame we didn’t get to go to the fabulous bridge we’ve always wanted to see!

Besides, that it is realy nice dam, it has few via ferratas on the front wall. One for families, second with two variants from the bottom to the top. Nice trails around the lake. Road, that leads there, is also brings nice views. Wort to see it. You need from few hours to hole day.

We drove to this beautiful destination. We have to pay a toll and wait for our turn to drive in because the toll road is only accessible one way. We can see the high wall of the arch dam as we drive towards this area. Once we pass the dam, we see this beautiful bluish lake. The scenery is so beautiful. We can take a walk beside the lake to enjoy the beauty at different angles. There are benches for you to relax while enjoying this scenic lake. We can walk on the arch dam.

For the best experience take your car. The road is not bad and there is the option of going through a single lane tunnel, which is worth the experience on its own. You can stop in many places to look at the views. The latter part of the road has some hairpin bends but these are not onerous and should definitely not put anyone off.
The lake is very attractive even on a dull day and leads to many walking trails for all abilities. Round part of the lake is flat and is a gravel road,no traffic, and well worth the walk for the views.Did not eat there but there are two places to eat near the main car park and a further place near the second car park, where there are toilet facilities. One euro charge is not eating there.Allow plenty of time if driving as you can have to wait up to 15 minutes at the tunnel and when entering the toll section, either up or down. That's a maximum time ours was probably just over half that.
Definitely a place to visit. If no car, do go by bus despite the toll fee.

Until now nature in New Zealand was, by far, the most exquisite I ever saw. But then I hit Schlegeisspeicher in Zillertal... It's breathtaking!

The blueblue lake, the glacier, the waterfall, the mountains with snow on top even in the summer, the purple and yellow flowers. Remember to recharge your camera before going!!

There is an easy 2,5 hour walk along the artificial lake (back and forth) - which can be extended if you fancy climbing a little.

In the opposite direction there is an easy 40 minutes walk (back and forth) to an amazing waterfall.

Close to the parking zones are a couple of huts where you can have a schnitzel or a cup of coffee.

If you come by car the admission fee to the area is €12. Go the second parking lot - both walks start from here.

Great walk along the dam wall. Scary height! A great platform out over the dam. We walked to the end of the reservoir which took almost an hour and a half. Saw some wildlife but that's all. It was quiet. Most people stay near the dam and restaurants. Use the bus from mayrhofen. They are every hour and costs 16 euro which includes a toll. Great journey up the valley. The bus ride is worth the trip alone. They are about every hour.

1 hour by bus from Mayrhofen, we paid 16.00 Euros the bus ticket with return, the place is very beautiful, we hiking up the Olpererhütte Mountains - 2389m. The only problem is that the restaurant closes early, the last bus leaves at 18:00 could be later in the summer.

We come to the Schlegesispeicher almost once a year because it is sort of a gateway to other attractions. Of course you can marvel at the dam itself, but it also leads to many other hiking destinations. Be prepared to pay a little extra because of the 'Maut', or tax/fee, in order to catch a ride here with either public transit (bus) or a taxi. There are a lot of switch-backs in order to get to the dam, so if you get car-sick easily, this may not be good for you!
Two of our favorite hikes from here are here is to the Olperer Hütte and another path that will lead you all the way into Italy! The Olperer route takes roughly 2 hours up and 1.5hrs back down if you're feeling up to it. Of course you can take it a bit more slow.
The route to Italy took the better part of a half of a day, but there is a place to rest and eat where you would turn abck around.
Then again, you could spend a half day just checking out the dam and its surrounding areas itself.
Whatever you choose to do once you're here, you won't be disappointed!

The drive from Mayrhofen is up a toll road in a deep valley, and is worth doing in its own right.
The lake is formed behind a high dam, and there is a good view of this from below as you approach. On arrival, there is ample parking. There is a limited bus service to and from Mayrhofen.
The lake and its setting are scenic, The walking at the lakeside is somewhat disappointing, as lakeside walking can be - on a rather scruffy gravel path. There is a hut selling locally cured ham and cheese, shortly after you set off. You can walk across the dam, in the other direction, if you wish.
There are of course some very demanding high-level hikes in the surrounding mountains: but the lake makes a welcome, flat alternative if you have overdone it hill-walking.

The Schlegeis Reservoir is only accessible via the toll road from Mayrhofen, passing through the idyllic village of Ginzling.
You can drive independently, paying the road toll when you get to Breitlahner. It's an interesting drive, passing through many tunnels and avalanche galleries, and you'll need a head for heights to negotiate the many hairpin bends that take you higher and higher up the valley. Be prepared to wait for up to 15 minutes at the first tunnel out of Mayrhofen as it is a one way system.
You can also get there by bus, taking the 4102 from Mayrhofen. It's free if you have a Zillertal Activ card but you'll have to pay a toll of 3.20 euros per person return.
One word of warning. The return bus to Mayrhofen leaves Schlegeis at 14.00, 16.00, 17.00 and 18.00. We planned to catch the 16.00 and people started to gather from 15.30. By 15.50 it was clear that we weren't all going to get on. When the bus pulled up to the stop it was a free-for-all with no allowances made for the very young or old. We were lucky enough to get on, but many did not make it which meant they had an hour's wait for the next bus (and no guarantee of getting on then due to the European complete disregard of queuing etiquette)
Having said all this, Schlegeis is a stunning place to visit. You can walk along the dam wall, and there are many hiking trails starting from this point up into the surrounding valleys and hills. The walk to the Pfister Joch House is very beautiful, if a bit steep at the very end.
There are plenty of places by the water to get a cold beer or something more filling while taking in the stunning view. Can't recommend it highly enough
