A première vue, on a du mal à imaginer que les fondations de ce monument datent d'avant l'an mille. Sans doute édifiée du 10ème au 12ème siècle, l'église fut reconstruite au 15ème siècle.

Les guerres de religions, aux 15ème et 16ème siècles, furent cause de déprédations et de destructions, réduisant l'église à l'état de ruines. Plusieurs campagnes de restauration et d'édification eurent lieu au 17ème siècle.

La nef possède trois vaisseaux, le central et le collatéral Sud sont plafonnés, le collatéral Nord est voûté d'ogives. L'architecture décline les différentes périodes de construction.

Deux vitraux figuratifs et un retable avec un tableau occupent les extrémités Est des nefs. Le vitrail de l'axe central évoque Saint-Médard, évêque de Noyon (456-560), patron de l'église.

Les dimensions modestes, un intérieur un rien contemporain côtoyant des éléments plus classiques, font de cet édifice un lieu gai et intime adapté à toutes démarches d'intériorité.

In the center of the village of Mervent, the Saint-Médard church, restored and remodeled several times, faces the old cemetery.
