The biggest imperial palace north of the Alps was established in Bad Wimpfen at the end of the 12th century under the Staufer dynasty, to which Friedrich I (Barbarossa) belonged. The skyline of the former Imperial Town sits majestically on top of the hill with its two keeps which have survived until the present day - the “Blue” and “Red” Towers – as well as the Imperial Palace Chapel, the Palace Arcades and the “Stone House”.Each Sunday at 2:00 p.m., guides in historical costume give tours of the old town and the Imperial palace.

We took the train from Heidelberg on a Monday to Bad Wimpfen. After getting off the train there was very little direction on where to go, etc. The tower was under construction and closed. The church was closed. The majority of the shops were closed. We were there for just over 2 hours and were quite bored. We did find... More

An excellent and charming walled medieval town full of cobblestone streets and half-timbered buildings. We unfortunately only had several hours to spend on a Sunday in Bad Wimpfen, but since we live an hour away in Stuttgart, I am sure we will return many times to visit and take guests. If you are a non-German and looking for a cute... More

Bad Wimpfen is very charming. A kingdom in its own right in the late middle ages, it is now reknowned as the best preserved medieval town in Baden-Wurttemberg. It can seem a bit sterile because it is so well-kept, but then you realize how amazing it is that it is intact in so many ways since about 1200! Just inside... More

Bad Wimpfen has been there a while and as a result it is rich in atmosphere and history with many stunning buildings and views. When we visited with family who live in a town nearby, BW was quite and allowed us a pleasant visit. As the TI mention, this village really comes alive at various times of the year, especially... Bad Wimpfen historical centre is beautiful, we managed to arrive here the day before a public holiday, so all was closed, except for some eateries. We did manage to climb the Blue Tower, lovely views over the town, wander the streets and view the stunning architecture, I fell in love! We also climbed another tower and looked at sone displays... The Village of Bad Wimpfen was a hidden gem. The townspeople were not use to tourists much less American ones but we were treated like royalty. The Palace, the Blue Tower (lots and lots of steps)and old city walls were amazing but the old town was simply stunning. All the nooks and crannies were a joy to peek into. And... More
