India's Switzerland indeed.
Apr 2021
Mesmerizing view, weather was clear unlike Gulmarg and we were lucky to spend 2-3 odd hours here. soothing, calm (except vendors), and magnificent view of Sonmarg. An awesome, unforgettable experience. India's Switzerland indeed.

Thajiwas Glacier of Ganderbal district is well connected by road network. It is located about 88 km from Srinagar,

I don't know whether we reached Glacier or not, as per Sled workers, " Ha janab yahi hai Thajiwas glacier" ( yes Sir, this is the point) but I was not sure. Since reaching the Parking spot, ok let me tell you (Kinda Scam) thing that happens in Sonmarg-Gulmarg-Pahalgam and nearby tourist area if you came here by cab thingking, we hired a cab and we can roam anywhere in the city, NO, BIG NO.

all you (rather your driver) can do is, come to parking and pay an exaggerated amount to reach other scenic spots by sled, taxi. Yes, hired cab from Srinagar is good for reaching the parking spot only. Their logic, is- what locals will do, this is their business and mind you, it all works on commission. Sled workers only get 30-40% of what you pay to the guy who comes to your car dealing with all the charge/fee.

So the guy who negotiated, we agreed on 1400/PP including boots and jackets, yes it was manual hard work and yup 1400 is fine, but after the activity, I realized, all I needed was boots, as we were already layers up in winter clothes and it was not that steep, so we could have managed the ascend with boots. and after the activity, you can tip your helper.

we only had this activity cause due to corona, other roads were closed, the city was sleepy, did not get many options to eat. I had been here in summer as well and that is equally beautiful.

Beautiful view of the Glacier
Apr 2021 • Couples
We went there on 5-6 April 2021. There was a lot of snow all around. The view is spectacular. You can either hire a snow bike or sledge to take you to the view point for the Glacier. Excellent view. But be careful before hiring the sledge. We were given to understand that two persons will pull/push our sledge and take us to the top of the first mountain. However we discovered later that the helpers are to be paid extra. We ended up paying more than Rs 3000 for two people. As we stayed one night, next day we were offered almost half the rate. This issue is present all the places in Kashmir. Bargain hard and learn about the rates beforehand.

Sonmarg is just waste of time and money.

The snow bike guys are frauds . There are very less snow bikes there and agents outside will not tell you that waiting time is 30-45 mins inside to get 1 bike. Pls enjoy snow bike at Gulmarg. And don’t go to Sonmarg as it is not worth.

Amazing sonmarg
Mar 2021
Sonamarg offers mesmarising views of glaciers from different places. when we were entering sonmarg from srinagar you have Indus river on your right with snow filled moutains from both sides. All srinagar cars stops at one place, from this place you can have snow jackets and gumboots. You can do snow activities such as sledge or you can opt for local sightseen from local taxis. We opt for local taxi. They charge us 1800 for three points in tavera: shiv patri, cable point and last village(sorry if i misspelled them). It is aroud 15-20 km ride. which offers nice views. we enjoyed it. We find very less options for eating here.

This was one trip which will be remembered for all its uncertainties but thats the beauty .We travelled from Srinagar and reached Sonamarg quite comfortably .Such a beautiful ride up.
Sonamarg is beautiful ,you can well compare it or mistake it to be a little Swiss town.
To go to Thajiwas Glacier its a little pony ride but the trip is not like visiting Kasmir valley from Pahalgam .The path is less steep .In fact a lot of movies have been shot herewe were told,Thajiwas Glacier is a beauty .You can sit here for ages and paly around on sledges.
But the weather suddenly detoriated and there was rain and hail storms. We were completely stranded for some time amidst nature with no proper shelter .But we then decided to brave the rain and descend as advised by our guides.Rain soaked Kashmir was a different sight for us . sitting on the ponies.
In all do visit Sonamarg and Thajiwas,it a little slice of heaven on Earth.

Sonmarg, which means 'meadow of gold' has, as its backdrop, snowy mountains against a cerulean sky. The Sindh meanders along here and abounds with trout and mahseer, snow trout can be caught in the main river. In late April when Sonmarg is open for road transport, the visitors can have access to snow which is furnished all over like a white carpet. Ponies can be hired for the trip up to Thajiwas glacier a major attraction during the summer months.

Mesmerizing
Jun 2019 • Couples
Certainly the best part of Sonmarg. You have to reach on a pony which by itself was wonderful. The views even on the way are to die for. The glacier itself is massive. Sledding is the main activity. For that you have to climb pretty high up on the glacier. That feels liberating but also exhausting. You can request the people taking you sledding to pull you up if you get too exhausted. Even without sledding it is not to be missed.

Mesmerizing

The glacier is simply mesmerizing! It takes about 20 mins to reach on a pony. Although many people have mentioned that the glacier is walkable, I would advice against it (esp for women), as it might leave them exhausted enough to take any other trip for next 1-2 days.
The sledge walas pester you, but the ride is enjoyable. Also, some people start pushing you from behind, during the sledge ride & they call themselves "helpers". Please be stern to them & avoid them!

Really an amazing, adventurous experience at sonamarg, you can also enjoy snow games at nominal charges, people are very good, even uneducated horse riders are noble enough, but if you want to hire a horse or want to perform any other activity at snow, just approach the owner itself, as middleman charge you including his commision, and dont try to deal with a person, to whom your driver or guide will direct you.
just do at your own, charges are nominal adnd u will enjoy alot
