This is an ideal venue for a beginner or novice or if you have had some difficult days and want an easier time. I decided to try this fishery for the first time and chose a 4 fish ticket, expecting to spend a day out on a lovely spring day. First of all, it's worth noting that the full day starts with a leisurely start time of 9am and finishes at 4pm. I was somewhat surprised about the early finish time but it quickly dawned on me why it was so early. It's so easy to catch fish here that it is very unlikely that anyone would require that long to catch their allotted maximum. It is too easy. The large lake is cloudy but the small lake is very clear. The banks are kept in very good condition. There are ample spots offering easy casting solutions, without snags - perfect for novices. It is a very pretty venue. The quality of the fish stock is very high, which is commendable. The typical sizes range from 2.5lb to 4lb, with a decent number of larger fish too (4 to 7lb mostly). Which brings me onto my biggest disappointment. The lakes are stuffed full of the smaller fish. I spotted a larger fish in the small lake but trying to entice it was almost impossible because of the 20 smaller fish that surrounded it at any one time. Even if there was half the stock of smaller fish, the lakes would still offer very easy catching opportunities, suitable for novices. At this stocking level, not catching is not down to stock levels but rather to fishing technique. There would be a great opportunity here to dramatically cut the stock numbers of 'standard' sized fish and use the saved money to add a greater variety of larger fish, thereby expanding the appeal of the fishery without spending any more on stock. Bring your novice/ beginner friends here. They will have a lovely time at a lovely venue. If you know what you're doing, don't bother bringing any lunch because you won't be here long enough to eat it before you have caught your limit.

Having spent some time in fields teaching my son to cast a fly, I took him to John o Gaunts for his first try at casting on water and working the fly, what a joy. the main lake was cloudy following a week of foul weather but the top lake was crystal clear and my son was very excited seeing trout chase his damsel lure; His first trout of 2.5lb gave a terrific fight and my son was overjoyed with his success; he then spent some time targeting a larger trout that we spotted patrolling a bay to our left AND HE CAUGHT IT (4.5LB). Thank you John O Gaunts, for a wonderful afternoon, my son is now well and truly hooked on fly fishing. Happy Dad.

It was good to be back at John O’Gaunt again, a rare treat marred only by the large lake being very coloured as a result, we were told, of some significant dredging following water quality problems during the Summer. Let’s hope all will be well for our visit next year. The smaller of the two lakes was as clear as usual and fishing well so eventually we managed to net a few. Except for the very coloured large lake on the day of our visit we have always found John O’Gaunt to be a well kept fishery in a wonderful setting where many other species of wildlife can be spotted. The fish are good quality, well finned and always tasty to eat.

I've fished here for over 30 years. I've had the privilege of introducing many friends to fly fishing here too. It's good value, stocks feisty fish and one of my favourite happy places.
