- Peter Joseph KuhnBali, Indonesia116 contributionsCrystal bay is amazing. But no cocktails. Bring your own snorkel, there’s amazing marine life just 50m from the shorelinThe only reason why I gave this place a 4 is because there are no Warungs that have cocktails or liquor, (only beers) and you have to pay 200k for a beach chair. A little overpriced in my opinion but there is a place you can rent snorkel gear from. The water is excellent to snorkel at, and it’s got an amazing sunset as well.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 February 2024
- Benson CSingapore668 contributionsCrowded Beach with Glistening WatersWere here during a day trip to Nusa Penida and wanted to take some time to bathe. The beach was rather crowded at around 3PM when we arrived and the blackish sand absorbed the heat where it was near impossible to have a comfortable stroll without proper footwear. The waters were cleared of much of the corals so not a very nice place for snorkeling. You have to charter one of the boats to go into deeper water to enjoy some good snorkeling. As is with tourist spots, amenities will be priced higher than normal and I would recommend giving this beach a pass for better ones in and around Bali.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 7 July 2024
- steph83500La Seyne-sur-Mer, France355 contributionsVery nice beaches and sunset, snorkellingWe stayed right next to the beach so we only went there in the morning for snorkelling and in the evening for sunset. During the day there must be a lot of people. The beach was clean, however as everywhere behind the buildings there is a lot of garbage. The sunset is beautiful and there are many fish in snorkelling. However, as with any ocean, you should know the tides and not swim mid-tide or pay attention to the currents. Pandan beach 10/15 minutes walk is beautiful.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 July 2024
- bbolsonPozuelo de Alarcon, Spain130 contributionsAbsolutely massedIt is a pretty cool beach, especially if you go first thing in the morning before 10:30 or last thing when the sunset is almost over. The rest of the day there are thousands of mostly Western people. It's a good place to snorkel. If you like it and the sunset is also very nice with the islet in the middle of the bay.. It has a lot of chiringuitos to eat (warung) although none is especially glamorous or cheap.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 August 2024
- Lucas DmlnParis, France38 contributionsCorrect rangeEasy to reach beach Pretty nice but crowded with tourists++ Snorkeling appreciable (clear water, several colorful fish varieties) Swimming a bit complicated with rocks++ especially in low tide We ate in the small family restaurant that pays no mine but is on the beach with nice views, the fried noodles were very good Beautiful sunsetVisited October 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 October 2024
- Aleksey P2 contributionsNot particularly impressed.A normal beach like this is full of thai for example. It's just that the beach is nothing but cool. Also the agonda in Goa is much better. Probably impress a man who is used to vacationing in SochiVisited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 November 2024
- JudithFreiberg, Germany87 contributionsIf it weren't for the fish snorkeling it would be a disappointment (dirty, uninviting beach)Oh yes, as so often, you can only be disappointed by the beaches here. It is best to look at current pictures here or on Google. The beach does NOT look like it did on the beautiful thumbnails (from 2017 or 2018). About a third of the promenade is currently blocked off with construction fence. Palm trees aren't there. When we came, there was garbage everywhere. Eventually someone came (before about 3 pm most of the tourists came) and put away a bit of the bigger things, like bottles. The prices are the absolute usury!! 100k for a beach chair. For comparison: We paid for scooter rental for the whole day 80k!!! We also found 100k for snorkeling gear too much without seeing the quality. With small swimming goggles we saw some cool fish despite waves. Otherwise, it would have been a disappointment.Visited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 November 2024
- Joshua L4 contributionsOverhyped, small, crowdedOverhyped beach. Very crowded with chairs and not very clean or tidy when we went. It wasn’t an attractive place to stay for hours. The surrounding view is very pretty. But as far as beaches go it’s not really anything spectacularVisited December 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 5 January 2025
- Dominic D5 contributionsStay at the poolNot very good not so crystal all over Bali now water is dirty so lucky in Australia the water and white sand is so clean .. but what really hit up my nose you need to stay there 2 /3 hours all depends how long your little group stays watching the cliffs and when you get to the beach there no shelter so your forced to hire 2 seat with umbrella they charge $20 Australian to sit if you want to have a clean water shower charge again. Absolutely a rip off Also you need to be pretty fit wouldn’t do if over 65 lots of hills and broken unstable ground..Visited January 2025Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 January 2025

The sunset is absolutely beautiful. However, the guy selling trips to watch the Manta rays is a jerk that ripped us off. We did not go to Manta Point as he promised us the day before and we went somewhere else instead and saw them for 20 minutes (he said we would stay there longer) and we only one ray because there where so many boats.
I’d recommend to book a tour with a company that is going to Manta Point in the middle of the south west coast of Nusa Penida. Manta Point is a popular dive site of Nusa Penida island, providing a unique opportunity to dive alongside majestic manta rays almost every day of the year.
The prices for food and drinks are definitely too high at the Crystal Bay, there are no restaurants in the area and everything is closed after 8pm.
The sunset is beautiful but you can also watch beautiful sunsets somewhere else on this island.

The beach is very commercialized. A lot of local stands, plus umbrellas and deckchairs that spoil the atmosphere of the place. The entrance to the water is gentle, but there are a lot of stones and boulders in the water, you have to be careful with them. The views from the beach are very photogenic. The toilet is in a very bad condition, there is a hole in the ground and there is a fee.

Beautiful but basic beach with shacks selling good food and cold beers/soda.
Painful to get in the sea without water shoes due to the coral.
Beware, there are no ATMs or mini markets (except a small shop with about 20 items in) only at the harbour.
I loved staying at Crystal Bay bungalows.
Top tip- If you’re looking at the sea on the far left on the right of the cave cafe you’ll see some steep steps. Don’t be put off by this. Climb and walk for about 15-20 mins (You’ll see beautiful butterflies 🦋) and you’ll come to a small secret beach called Pandan beach. Absolutely stunning. There’s a shack there selling snacks and cold drinks.
Good for snorkelling. Bit rough for swimming but you can dip.
Definitely do a Manta Ray trip. I swam with one, absolute highlight!!

We didn't like Crystal Bay at all, we rented accommodation near Crystal Bay for 4 nights but we decided to leave after 2 nights...even losing 2 nights, cancellation impossible. Crystal bay has a beach with lots of big dangerous stones, with strong waves, possibility of harming yourself, jellyfish with lines that sting hard, boats that are ready to pass over heads just to make money to bring tourists for snorkling, the prices in the small local restaurants are much more expensive because there is no choice or other restaurants nearby...the water is not clean in the afternoon mixed with sand, so we sees nothing in terms of snorkeling, only large stones. Desperate, the next day we looked for Padang bai but we took the wrong path and got lost in the bush which was too difficult. Finally we saw the staircase leading up to it but ultimately we gave up on this idea. Plus no places to change money...If you are OK with renting a scooter, maybe there are other places to do on Nusa Penida, but without a scooter I strongly advise against Crystal bay...Snorkling impossible, too many jellyfish, the sunset is pretty but that's all there is there, the water and the bottom of the beach are horrible (we were with our own masks), I read too many good comments from tourists about Crystal Bay but frankly it's not really worth it because of the bottom of the sea which is not good at all, the dangerous stones, jellyfish etc. Don't want to swim in it at all. Only deckchairs that locals rent at high prices and restaurants the same with higher prices. ..

Pleasant beach and beautiful seabed.
On the other hand, deadly sea currents and unsupervised swimming despite a very high tourist density which requires an entry fee.
It is a scandal !!!
The swimming of hundreds of tourists is absolutely unsupervised.
No guards, no lookouts to monitor anything.
My wife and I almost died this afternoon.
We are still in shock because we saw death very closely.
We managed by sheer force of nerve to take refuge on a rock which was visible from the beach for over an hour, screaming and making official signs of distress, but in vain.
Two boats without tourists passed us without stopping and fortunately, much later a third full of tourists passed the same place.
It was the tourists who asked for the boats to come and rescue us.
After saving our lives, the boat manager still had the nerve to ask us for money.
We are still in shock.
I will write a letter to the consulate as soon as I return from vacation.
How many deaths are a life guard worth?

I am surprised at the reviews stating how beautiful this beach is. As an Aussie who lives at the beach maybe I’m spoilt but I did not find this a nice experience by any means. You arrive in a huge carpark and walk down to a beach which has loads of people on it … very dirty lounges, tables and chairs around all the food/drink vendors. Very unpleasant experience wading into the water with rubbish touching your legs and floating past as you’re swimming. The water did not feel clean at all! The amenities block is not large enough to cope with the masses of tourists, one of two squat toilets which are filthy and blocked and you have to pay for it. Did not use the shower but didn’t hear good comments whilst there. Make sure you have your swimmers/bathers/bikini on before you get here as there is nowhere to change apart from this toilet block & the toilet floor is soaked .. so nowhere to put your stuff while you’re changing! It was however, pleasing to learn that a new bigger facility is being built .. it is definitely needed to cope with the huge amount of tourists! If you can, ask to change your tour to stay longer at Kelingking beach (it’s a hike) and avoid Crystal Bay!

Totally overcrowded, rip-off with food and loungers, garbage, noise etc. etc.
Why give this place 5 stars? Just because you traveled far for it, you'd rather take the steps to Pandan Beach - 10 minutes well spent

This is the most polluted and disgusting beach I have ever been to and I live in Cleveland Ohio where our rivers used to catch on fire and our lake was declared “dead”. It is like a landfill with water. There dirty chairs to rent—overpriced-and dirty food shacks that sale junk food-the wrappers to which are discarded on the beach as there are no trash cans. A pay toilet in the parking lot offers pay showers-in a room with an overflowing squat toilet...The problem is that this is the only beach on the Island that does not require a long trek down a massive cliff in 90 plus degree heat. So make sure your shots are updated and pack something to eat if you have to go.

Our driver brought us here for the sunset which we were told was supposed to be the best in Nusa Penida and we were unlucky to not have witnessed a good one that day. While that can be down to our bad luck, there was nothing great about the beach itself. It was nice to just take a stroll along the coast but it could have been skipped for something else.

This beach is not worth the journey at all !
overcrowded place to be riped off by locals (renting sun lounger or snorkeling Tour)
- The beach is full with those old sun loungers and plastic parasols.
- Absolute rip off beach
- Waste all over the place
- overcrowded on the beach and in the water ! it's a surprise that people don't get hit by all these boats there and drown.
- as long tourists pay the prices no need to stop raising prices and to be less greedy
as a locals. (friendliness has vanished at this spot)
- nothing friendly to say about this spot.
I used to live some time in Indonesia and there are a lot of beaches which deserve being ranked as perls. This one definitely not !
You are absolutely right their if you love mass tourism !

How much is it per person to go snorkeling with Manta Rays from Crystal Bay?
How much would a private boat charter be?
Can the snorkeling trip with Manta Rays be done in the afternoon as well? or is it only in the morning?
Written 25 November 2019
I am looking to book a Manta Ray snorkelling trip from Crystal Bay.
I am planning on briefly visiting Lembongan and Ceningan in the morning, getting a ferry over to Nusa Penida at 12pm and then staying overnight on Nusa Penida.
I have read that most of the Manta Snorkelling Trips depart early in the morning however, if I arrive at Crystal Bay at around 12pm/1pm, can I still get a 2/3hr private boat snorkelling trip or do they not run in the afternoons? Also, how much would it cost for a 2 person private boat trip?
Thanks

is it easy to book a snorkeling trip on the beach? how much will it cost?
Written 10 August 2017
Yes you can book snorkeling there. But the guys are not very friendly and it is (compared to other snorkling-spots) very expensive!!
They charge you 50k for just the (really shitty!!) equipment for 1 hour, snorkeling trip 1 hour just to manta bay is 200k (not private)
It‘s not negotiable..
Book your snorkeling trip from Lembogan, there you get a private tour for 200k per Person for 4 hours and as many spots as you like, including all the equipment. (And crystal bay is actually just a 10min drive ;))
At gili‘s you pay like 100k per person for 4 hours.
