One of the Highlights of Canberra!

Both the quality of the art and the biographies of the subjects make this a "not to be missed" experience

This gallery is a little understated in its reputation in the top attractions in Canberra. But this is far from the case. A beautiful gallery that showcases some fantastic Australian art. Take the time to read the descriptions for each of the paintings, a wonderful showcase of the characters that have made Australia great. Would highly recommend a visit.

This gallery is worth a visit. Portraits are an introduction to the heart of people. Lots to see: the new Quentin Bryce portrait is powerful & they have a curious exhibition showing paintings by artists of their pets. The cafe is good for excellent coffee & delicious cafe food. Lots of great gifts in the gift shop!

I was really surprised by this. The portrait galleries were a trip into history, starting with the most recent in the entry gallery. The history of each portrait and the actual subject was fantastic. Allow a few hours. A magnificent portrait of Deborah mailman and a haunting gle beautiful painting of gurrumul were the highlights for me. Definitely worth doing... More

This is one of those places you should only go to if you really really enjoy paintings of historically significant Australian figures. I know that sounds obvious, but there is nothing surprising or thrilling about this place.

Pioneers, tennis players, dancers, artists, writers. Oil paintings, acrylics, sculptures, photographs, drawings. Styles from nineteenth century traditional to right now managing to live together in harmony. Gaze into their eyes. Discover who we are through who they were or are. Go for the art, go for the people, just go.

The national portrait gallery is a very attractive gallery next to the high court, and can be easily taken in during a 1 to 3 hour visit. Great for the art, but also a lesson in Australian history.
