Architecture tours of Sydney.

The Sydney Architecture Walks explore ideas through architecture offering an interface between architecture and the wider community. Each route is driven by certain themes and ideas and attempts to decode the city whilst stimulating new ways of thinking about and seeing Sydney. On bike and on foot we trespass joyfully across disciplines and genres as we seek out the projects that respond to the culture, history and environment of Sydney and not just imported formulaic codes.

This was really interesting. It was a very thorough explanantion about Jorn Utzon and the Opra House. It covered all sorts of things, the history of the opera house project, the history and chronology of Jorn Utzon and what may happen in the future. It went for 3 hours so bring plenty of water and maybe a snack to eat... More

We were on the SAW1 tour the morning of the tornado. Luckily it did not hit the CBD. Despite the wet and wind we had a fascinating tour of a wide variety of buildings. Don't think of this as a way to see the usual tourist spots like the Opera house. Do that another time. You will see and discuss... More

The SAW 1 City tour of Sydney is the perfect way to learn some of the fascinating history of this city, appreciate buildings that you may walk by every day and love the beauty of its modern architecture. Eoghan combines deep knowledge with great presentation, a true enthusiast who can help you appreciate the complexity of changing the environment of... More

Learning more about this outstanding architect and the debacle that led to him leaving Australia was one of the most interesting experiences I've had for a very long time. I'm a regular attendee at the Opera House, but will be so much more aware when next I visit - what a gift that is. Eoghan was passionate and knowledgeable about... More

We joined Eoghan for his Modern Architectural Tour. What an amazingly informative and engaging guide. We heard the stories behind the buildings and learnt about the architects who were commissioned to design the buildings on our route. From building materials to architectural influences; from ideas to grievances. Eoghan was a remarkable guide. His knowledge was deep and his passion for... More

Eoghan is a well-informed guide and his excitement for this city and its stories is both compelling and contagious. Sydney is a spectacular, glittering, harbour city – it sells itself. The SAW tours deepen this experience by making the city seem more familiar and welcoming, and in my case, more like My Sydney.

If you really want to get to know Sydney take one of these tours. Great for both tourists and locals, you will discover another side of Sydney no matter how well you thought you may have known it before. I was lucky enough to take two tours as part of the Sydney Architecture Festival both Eoghan and Ben were immensely... More

I went on the SAW 3 - Harbourings tour and loved it. As a visitor who knows very little about Sydney, it was a great introduction. A little bit of history, culture, and context using architecture and public spaces as a way to prompt the conversations. I definitely recommend it and hope to go on more SAW tours.

The most informative and enthralling guided tour I think I've ever been on. Eoghan's knowledge of, and passion for, the work of Utzon on the Opera House, together with his natural ability to tell a good story, kept us totally engaged for almost 4 hours. You will learn not just about this beautiful building, but about its historical context and... More

Hi Anne. Thanks for your super-generous review. I'm humbled. It really is Sydney's great story; our own little Greek myth full or tragedy and triumph in equal measure. Hope to see you on another tour one day. Cheers from Eoghan, Hugo and Ben. More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
The Sydney Central Business District is abuzz with energy. Power brokers run to and from high rise buildings and after-work drink places, high-end shoppers tour venues like the QVB, and fine diners frequent the many celebrity chef restaurants. For a dose of culture, walk to the NSW Art Gallery, or visit the Sydney Museum. To escape the hustle and bustle, reconnect with nature at the Sydney Botanical Gardens or picnic lunch at High Park. No matter your interest, be sure to check the full calendar of events hosted by the city, from the Sydney Festival in January to October’s Good Food Month at Hyde Park.
