My wife and I had a fantastic visit to this free entry museum. While waiting for the free tour, we enjoyed a flat white in the gallery cafe on the 4th floor with its open air terrace and great views over Circular Quay and the harbour. Our tour guide was Penelope who picked out 10 of her favourite exhibits and... More

I have visited the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) on many occasions over the years and I can honestly say that I have never enjoyed seeing any of the art showing there. I have seen all types of media represented, including: paper, wire, rope, fishing line, plastic, concrete, iron, steel, gold, pebbles, boulders, tiles, sand, water, leaves, tree branches, grass,... Generally the current exhibition is seriously sub standard for contemporary art. Don't get me wrong. I love good art!! There are a few worthwhile exhibits, the rest are a complete insult to those that choose to attend !!! I would hate to think how much taxpayer dollars are thrown at the current exhibition? Surely there should be serious bench marks... More

Highly recommend this for a rainy day, a very hot day when you need an indoor activity in the afternoon, or if you're in the area and need a break. The location is outstanding- close to cruise ship docking area and rocks tourist area. It's got some fun art exhibits and artistic movies. It is only for mature crowds- I... More

Free museum next to Circular Quay. I actually am genuinely interested in contemporary art so was quite excited about going. It's a great facility, to be completely honest I was left a tad disappointed by the exhibits, which I didn't find (on the whole, with exceptions) to be engaging, thought provoking or aesthetically pleasing. So overall a great facility, but... More

We attended the MCA on Easter Monday to see the National Exhibition. We chose to take the guided tour at 1pm. The works are an eclectic group from varying artists which would have been lost without the wonderful guide, who explained the works. Particularly interesting was the Gary Carsley work which took over a whole room. This is a very interesting... More

I don't always understand or get installation art and new media, but it does intrigue me, and isn't that the job of the artist. Beautiful space with stunning harbor views. There is a lot of art in these walls, much of it avant-garde and a bit strange. Lots of new media space with videos. I was sad I had just... More

After having recently visiting MONA in Hobart, there is no comparison, but still there are some interesting artwork, but too many video rooms for the limited space. There is no entry cost, but the cafe on the 4th floor has panoramic views over the harbour including the Bridge and Opera House. Well worth a visit.

The exhibitions are poor. Even my friend who studied arts made the same conclusion. But it's free and it's in the city, you may just go in and have a look. Just don't have high expectations.

Staying in The Rocks

Neighbourhood Profile
The Rocks
The first residents of the Rocks were convicts and sailors from the old nation. As the oldest neighbourhood in the city, the area's cobblestone streets host more than 100 heritage sites and buildings, including the oldest house in Sydney, Camden Cottage, which was built in 1816. Taste a “midi “ or a “schooner” of beer and dine “al fresco” on the waterfront at some of the oldest pubs in Sydney. The weekend markets at the Rocks are where you can find local artists' hand-made souvenirs, organic food and designer jewelry in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. To enjoy some of the best Australian and international contemporary art, the MCA museum is open every day and select evenings. At the end of a long day of sightseeing, be sure to save energy to dance the night away at the area's many late night entertainment venues.
