A charming area in the old and historic part of Sydney free from high rise buildings. There are numerous small shops in the narrow streets selling all kinds of crafts and gifts.

Walked around the area a number of times during stay in Sydney. Arts and and crafts on Sat and Sunday. Great for getting that special gift to take home. Good restaurants and bars.

Funny how time changes things. Originally this area, known as Tallawoladah, was very poor. The arrival of convicts certainly did not help matters. It’s been told that convicts were simply abandoned at this site with no provisions! The area has experienced a gentrification and now is full of souvenir shops and restaurants. Locals are concerned about the area, fearing too... More

Lovely place to explore in Sydney during the day. Great restaurants, historical and quirky shopping. The little back steps of The Rocks are a great place to walk and explore Sydney

Start at Geoge St and explore the back streets of this historic old Sydney town, there are many points of interest, observe the original architecture, the famous steps. Have a beer in the Irish Pub or Philips Foot, continue your walk under the Harbour Bridge, into Barangaroo and Darling Harbour ... lots to see, enjoy

The Rocks is the oldest part of Sydney. It is where the convicts were dropped off. There was no prison or jail. If they wanted to have shelter it was up to them to build it. Most of the really old stuff is gone but there are still a lot of buildings that were built for the shipping industry and... More

Great neighborhood but some parts are being gobbled up by developers who are flipping the houses for big bucks displacing the elderly residents. As a tourist, you might not notice this but you should be aware that the face of the rocks is changing.

The rocks has many a sight and things to do. This historical area of Sydney set next to the circular quay area of the harbour can keep you entertained for a full day. Take your time to walk around and view the older parts of Sydney whilst taking in some breathtaking views of the opera house and harbour bridge from... More

Buzzy place great atmosphere and restaurant. Met up with an old school friend in the Glenmore what a place. Efficient service; great location with brilliant rooftop view over the Harbour.

Staying in The Rocks

Neighbourhood Profile
The Rocks
The first residents of the Rocks were convicts and sailors from the old nation. As the oldest neighbourhood in the city, the area's cobblestone streets host more than 100 heritage sites and buildings, including the oldest house in Sydney, Camden Cottage, which was built in 1816. Taste a “midi “ or a “schooner” of beer and dine “al fresco” on the waterfront at some of the oldest pubs in Sydney. The weekend markets at the Rocks are where you can find local artists' hand-made souvenirs, organic food and designer jewelry in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. To enjoy some of the best Australian and international contemporary art, the MCA museum is open every day and select evenings. At the end of a long day of sightseeing, be sure to save energy to dance the night away at the area's many late night entertainment venues.
