More of an arboretum than a botanic garden, poor and sometimes incorrect placing of labels, some plants in poor condition. Worst of all, no facilities for getting around a large site for people with disabilities apart from a small road train that you have to pay for and which only runs every half an hour.

Sydney’s gardens are an expansive, open-field, park-type setting. Lots of beautiful views of the harbour and park. This differs significantly from Melbourne’s, which is much more of a botanic gardens showcase.

We walked around the gardens a couple of times during our stay. It rained once so we sat in a covered area till it stopped. Plenty to look at and information signs everywhere, also historic statues dotted about. Ibis type birds wander around, they are quite funny to look at but friendly. Beautiful place to visit.

My primary objective was to take photos of the Sydney Opera from various angles. As the botanical gardens are located on one side, I decided to talk a walk through the gardens. To my surprise, admission was free. Yet the gardens were very well maintained. The benches spread throughout provide perfect vantage points.

I live in Sydney and rarely get to just hang out and explore my city. I have been to many botanic gardens in Australia and OS and I would have to say the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney are amazing with some spectacular old trees, Like the 200 year Hoop Pine, Dragon Blood Tree and the Morton Bay Figs spectacular.

If you love trees and want to see some big ones, I recommend a visit here. The trees are fabulous and there are lots of other plants to see as well. It is a great place to pass an afternoon or two.

We took a stroll through the gardens and marvelled at the layout and fantatstic plants and local bird life. It was all the more interesting because of the city skyline behind in complete contrast to the gardens.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
The Sydney Central Business District is abuzz with energy. Power brokers run to and from high rise buildings and after-work drink places, high-end shoppers tour venues like the QVB, and fine diners frequent the many celebrity chef restaurants. For a dose of culture, walk to the NSW Art Gallery, or visit the Sydney Museum. To escape the hustle and bustle, reconnect with nature at the Sydney Botanical Gardens or picnic lunch at High Park. No matter your interest, be sure to check the full calendar of events hosted by the city, from the Sydney Festival in January to October’s Good Food Month at Hyde Park.
