A "must" for anyone, including other faiths. The tour guide was most engaging and one could tell he LOVED telling us about his beloved Synagogue. (Understandably, no photos were allowed)

This is Sydney's oldest synagogue and the architecture both external from Elizabeth Street) and internal is well worth seeing. The ceiling in the main area is celestial blue with scattered gold stars and is just beautiful. It is open a couple of days a week for visitors.

Was here as part of the Sydney Open Event. As a group we were seated for an abbreviated 20min tour of the Synagogue. Security was tight as that is the world we live in now! Guides were passionate and knowledgable. All questions were well handled. Very fancy and elaborate interior with lots of history and anecdotes attached. Ritual is a... More

Only viewed again from the outside and looked like a fabulous older building of Sydney. More time required in this great city to see everything1

The Great Synagogue of Sydney, Australia is said by its website to be the most beautiful in Australia and one of the finest in the world. It is an Australian treasure, but also has a "vibrant congregation" with activities and services. "It welcomes all Jews," regardless of their various differences, and visitors are welcome for both tours and services.

Built in 1878, the Great Synagogue is a beautiful edifice, still very actively used by the Sydney Jewish community, and representative of the evolution of Judaism through synagogue design. As explained by our tour leader, the bimah (pulpit) was originally located in the center of the large sanctuary, but was moved to the front to allow the large congregation to... More

I wanted to see this synagogue and waited most of my trip to go on the tour. I have been to many in many different countries and have always been allowed to photograph before ... It's kind of why I go! The tour was short and the video I could have seen online. The tour guide seemed disinterested. It's a... More

Great Synagogue is a beautiful Synagogue built in the XIX century and it has a gothic style. It is located in Elizabeth St., close to the Hyde Park in Sydney. It is a beautiful synagogue to see it from outside or better from the Hyde Park. It was a pity, because we could not to enter in the Synagogue, because... More

We were only able to see it from the outside as it was locked, but as the oldest synagogue in Sydney, it is quite beautiful! It's certainly worth a visit especially if you're near Hyde Park

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
The Sydney Central Business District is abuzz with energy. Power brokers run to and from high rise buildings and after-work drink places, high-end shoppers tour venues like the QVB, and fine diners frequent the many celebrity chef restaurants. For a dose of culture, walk to the NSW Art Gallery, or visit the Sydney Museum. To escape the hustle and bustle, reconnect with nature at the Sydney Botanical Gardens or picnic lunch at High Park. No matter your interest, be sure to check the full calendar of events hosted by the city, from the Sydney Festival in January to October’s Good Food Month at Hyde Park.
