anual event (1st weekend in march) drawing locals and tourists, aside from trains there are also stalls run by locals selling fruits, honey and preserves, silver jewellery, clothes and leather work. you may also see an occasional person in period dress, including a man with a parrot on a penny farthing!

Expensive day out and broke down on way back - waited ages for our snack pack paid for and included in our ticket price - hot - train museum very 'touristy' - had to get off at station half hour out of Central and wait for a city train to get us back to Central where we started our journey... Great day out, especially for steam train aficionados. We started out from Sydney Central by rail through Picton to Thirlmere. Very well presented and wonderful display of railway rolling stock and memorabilia to be found there. My family, friends and I spent hours wandering and investigating many of these interesting displays. The highlight for me (being one of those aficionados)... More

It is Australia's newest and biggest rail experience. That said it was ok for something to do for an hour plus depending how interested in trains you are. The cafe was shut on the way out it may have been shut on the way in. It was Sunday.

My thirteen year old son and I enjoyed the Thirlmere Steam Train Museum. We spent three hours looking at old steam trains. Included were a green coach car for workers working on the tracks. There were also iron and coal cars. The old roundhouse for turning the engines was still there. A few steam trains operate on the weekends and... More

This a world class museum in respect to transportation and railways. The museum precinct is modern, well laid out and has a large number of well preserved exhibits and is certainly worth a visit even if you only have a passing interest in trains. Certainly one most children will enjoy. The only downside is if you use public transport to... More

Train Works in the little town of Thirlmere a couple hours drive south west of Sydney is a very impressive museum of all things railway covering the history of the rail transport system in New South Wales from the beginning. There are beautifully restored and presented Steam Engines, carriages as well as some early Diesels. It is a very large... More

Although Thirlmere is a 90 minute drive from the CBD, its mostly motorway and you get out in the country air....subject to coal smoke pollution at site. This is great fun for young kids (full size Thomas and steam train ride) and parents with an interest in memorabilia. The museum has a good assortment of steam engines and commuter carriages...
