My partner and I decided to visit Chambers Pillar due to the influx of Master's Games Participants, hoping that it might be a quiet time to visit. We were right; we were the only ones at the Pillar. The journey to the Pillar was quick, with the Old South Road being in pretty good condition at the moment. The camp... More

It's years since my first visit , I remember looking down that steep rutted dirt road and thinking ....am I really going down there and once I do will I ever get up again , one of the joys of 4 wheel driving is testing your nerve & the caperbility of your vehicle . The road has been improved also... More

This was the highlight of our 12 day trip from Cunnamulla Qld to Alice Springs travelling across the Simpson Desert. We camped here one night. Thought it was a magical place. Much preferred it to Ayres Rock.

For all the talk of the terrible road to Chambers Pillar from Alice Springs were thought it was well worth the effort. Go in the afternoon stay the night - seeing the sunset and sunrise. The Pillar is at its best morning and night. The campground is basic, but its remoteness is part of the attraction. There are drop toilets... More

After a long and bumpy drive from Alice Springs, we spotted the Pillar from a distance. Drawing closer, and in the evening light, well, stunning.

Located in the Chambers Pillar Historic Reserve about 100 k's south of Alice Springs, it is necessary to travel to Maryvale along the route of the old Ghan railway, with a interesting stop at the old Rodinga fettlers siding, then turn off to the reserve. It is advisable to have a 4WD past Maryvale due to corrugations, sand & bull... More

The campsite at Chambers Pillar is well kept with effective gas BBQs and clean drop toilets. We were in a rented 4WD Landcruiser camper and, while conditions will change after rain, this is how we found the access road. The road from Alice Springs to Maryville is a good dirt road with a few patches of sand and deeper gravel... More

You need to take the Ghan exit on route to the Alice Springs airport. This is where the paved road pretty much ends. The road to Maryvale is unsealed with some sandy parts and some smooth parts but is mostly corrugated road. It should take about 1.5 to 2.0 hr even for those with little 4WD experience. Take a break... More

This stand-alone 50m sandstone pillar is what's left after weathering over the past 350 m years of softer sandstones laid down in that era. Named by the redoubtable [and ultimately tragic] J. McDouall Stuart after James Chambers, one of his Adelaide based financiers, its about 50km west of the Old Ghan rail line, which itself pretty much follows Stuart's path... More

Definitely worth a visit when you're in the area, provided you have a suitable vehicle. A beautiful formation in a beautiful landscape, with cultural & spiritual significance. Worth spending a night here to witness a sunrise and sunset. Make sure you're prepared and check road conditions and vehicle suitability before visiting.
