First time trip to Cairns, we treated ourselves to a trip on the Kuranda railway back from Kuranda. It was a lovely trip and a great photo opportunity of the train, the scenery and mountainous surroundings. There was a short stop at the Barron Falls and we got some really nice photos. It was worth the trip, the commentary was great and gave an insight into the building of that track, what an astounding feat. I would defenitely do it again and maybe book the Gold Class.

On our recent trip to Cairns, we treated ourselves to a Gold Class trip on the railway back from Kuranda. It was a lovely trip and our hostess, Melinda, was really lovely and took very good care of us. Melinda made sure we knew in advance when a photo opportunity was about to present itself and which side of the train to look out of. There was a short stop at the Barron Falls and we got some really nice photos. It was worth the extra money and would gladly do it again.

The "heritage" carriages of this service have an atmosphere all of their own which adds to the experience. Staff are friendly and happy to answer questions. The printed guide and tour commentary are really very good. Kuranda railway station is outstanding for its tropical gardens. Congratulations Queensland Rail and Kuranda Scenic Railway.

From the days of steam to those of diesel, this special train wends its way from Cairns to Kuranda every day. No longer can you put your heads out the windows to "get a better view". Workplace health and safety, you know. Even so, all views are spectacular, especially back towards the coast on a clear day. It never ceases to amaze that the tunnels were mostly cut out by heavy duty man power - pick and shovel with occasional use of dynamite. If you travel in the front or rear carriages, there are several curves from which you can see almost the entire train. Enjoy! If you want a little extra comfort, a drink and a few nibbles, you can pay for the gold class carriage.
