Description:

The park's wildlife viewing areas and walking and mountain bike trails...

The park's wildlife viewing areas and walking and mountain bike trails offer a range of nature-based recreation activities close to the centre of Townsville. The park features deep-water lagoons and seasonal wetlands, coastal woodlands and vine thickets, and sheltered beaches fringed by rocky headlands. Summer rains transform the area into an immense wetland, attracting large flocks of waterbirds.

Hike across Many Peak Range, enjoy expansive island views while riding the Under the radar mountain bike trail or walk the trail to enjoy a picnic in beautiful secluded Shelley Beach. For birdwatchers, the park is a paradise! From bird hides and observation points, watch flocks of magpie geese, brolgas, finches, wrens and cisticolas; up to 280 species have been recorded here.

I went for an early morning cycle around the lagoon and wetland tracks, stopping in at the bird hides. There were brolgas, magpie geese, pelicans and other water birds. Despite the rest of Townsville being in drought, this area was very green and a flourishing ecosystem.

For a bird lover, this was heaven sent. A fantastic variety of species in some pretty beautiful scenery. Views out over the wetlands and airport to Castle Hill.

We enjoyed a great morning at the Town Common only a few kilometres north of Townsville. The bird life was amazing. So many magpie geese! Brolgas dancing as soon as we took our camera out and a brilliant sunbird performing acrobatics right in front of us. Remember your insect repellent as the mozzies descended in swarms. The road in is... More

Had a mid morning walk in this fabulous reserve to observe birds. The gravel road past the Golf Course will be approximately 3 kms to the first bird hide. At present this only provided a view of some Herons, Pelicans, Egrets and Ibis. Driving further on the road to the Melaleuca viewing area we were so lucky to see a... More

Being visitors to the area we decided to have a nosey and drove into this Park. We drove a couple of kilometres along a very corrugated dusty gravel road and all we saw was fenced off scrub. On our left was the airport and on our right was the golf club. We ended up turning around.

The town common is a great place to get back to North QLD Nature without having to drive very far at all. The road into the common is dirt, with large speed humps. There are two bird hides/ viewing areas on the road and a further two very close to the main parking area at the end of the road.... More

This is a free attraction. Once you turn off the main road you drive past a golf course and onto a dirt/gravel road which is fine for 2WD vehicles. There are several places to stop and watch all sorts of wetland birds do their thing. There are at least 3 hides that I can remember. Apparently there are trails that... More

Birds, birds and then some more birds. If you're into nature in general or obsessed with feathery friends, here is where you'll find them. Take mosquito spray and a torch and go at dusks.

Nice little family outing. Gave my son the opportunity to try out his new camera. Make sure you don't mind a bit of dust on your vehicle and pack the sunscreens and insect repellent.

Quite a long drive in on unsealed road but not a problem for 2WD. Much of the area had had some type of fire event fairly recently - vandalism? natural disaster? land management? There were lots of flies. I walked through to the jacana hide but there was no wetland and not even one wetland bird. I heard a few... More
